Concluding Florence

I arrived in Florence after a hectic and challenging past few semesters. I was constantly engulfed in pursuing academic excellence, extracurricular activities, and professional endeavors, with little to no time to enjoy life as it passed by. For me, the present became a fleeting moment. Being abroad in Florence for almost four months now has completely dismantled my previous self. I learned to sit with uncertainty, savor every small moment, challenge my own perspectives, and find my footing through uncertainty. Traveling through Italy and across Europe has taught me the importance of enjoying unplanned moments, not always following a planned and optimized schedule. From meeting new friends, discovering niche new cities, and connecting with my international community, exploring the unexpected became my favorite time to grow.

Academically, my studies in Florence have pushed me to engage with topics I never otherwise would have. My Renaissance Art History class gave me a newfound appreciation and respect for visual art without just studying through readings and exams. I had the opportunity to stand in front of Michelangelo’s David and actually apply the historical context and wider themes of what I was learning. Since going abroad, I find myself to be more patient with complex coursework that involves deeper critical thinking. Unlike before going abroad, I now have no problem sitting longer with my thoughts before making decisions.

Throughout my time abroad, I’ve also gained countless new global perspectives that will serve me throughout my professional endeavors. Adaptability, communication, and comfort with discomfort are just some of the important skills I’ve gained while abroad that will help me perform in high-stakes professional environments. As I move closer to graduation and entering my future professional career, I’m forever grateful that I had the opportunity to discover these skills organically while abroad in Florence.

After my study abroad experience, I’m looking forward to returning to Pitt with a much better sense of who I am. I took away countless lessons and experiences from my study abroad experience, and gained such unique perspectives that will positively differentiate me for the rest of my life. I’m so excited to continue exploring the world and adding to my global perspectives. This experience was a privilege, and I’m extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to be in Florence this semester. To my scholarship donor, thank you for helping to make this opportunity possible for me. I’m still exploring the impact studying abroad has had on my growth.
