One area where I have experienced uncertainty during my internship has been adjusting to the pace of work during the Swedish summer. Coming into the internship, I expected to be constantly busy with projects and meetings, similar to what I had experienced in previous jobs or what I had heard from others about internships. However, I quickly learned that summer in Sweden is a unique time of year. Many employees take extended vacations during this season, and as a result, the office is much quieter and there are naturally fewer ongoing projects. At first, I wasn’t sure if this slower pace was normal or if I was doing something wrong. I found myself wondering whether I should simply wait for assignments or take a more proactive approach.
This uncertainty challenged me because I wanted to make the most of my internship experience. Since I traveled all the way from the United States to Stockholm for this opportunity, I wanted to gain as much professional experience as possible. I knew that sitting back and waiting for work would not help me develop new skills or contribute to the company. Instead, I realized that I needed to take initiative and communicate with my colleagues about my goals and my interest in becoming more involved.
One of the most valuable lessons I have learned is the importance of asking for opportunities rather than waiting for them to come to me. I started reaching out to coworkers and letting them know that I had additional availability and was eager to contribute wherever I could. Rather than assuming they knew I wanted more responsibility, I made an effort to communicate openly and express my willingness to help. This approach made a significant difference. My colleagues appreciated my enthusiasm and began including me in additional projects that aligned with my interests.
As a result, I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of marketing materials, which has been one of the highlights of my internship so far. I have been able to apply concepts I have learned in my marketing courses at the University of Pittsburgh to real-world business situations. Working on these materials has strengthened my understanding of branding, communication strategies, and creating content for professional audiences. It has also allowed me to develop technical and creative skills while gaining confidence in my ability to contribute meaningful work to a professional team. Looking back, I am glad I chose to speak up because it transformed my internship experience from one where I felt uncertain into one where I feel engaged and challenged.
This experience has also taught me an important lesson about professional communication. Sometimes managers or coworkers are simply busy and may not realize that an intern has capacity for additional work. Rather than interpreting a lack of assignments as a lack of trust or opportunity, I learned that taking initiative and advocating for myself can open new doors. This is a skill I know will benefit me throughout my future career, regardless of the industry I work in.
Outside of work, the slower pace of the Swedish summer has also allowed me to fully experience life in Stockholm. One aspect of Swedish culture that I have really come to appreciate is the emphasis on maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Even though the office may be quieter during the summer, people genuinely value taking time to rest, spend time with family, and enjoy the beautiful weather. Experiencing this firsthand has given me a new perspective on how productivity and personal well-being can coexist.
Because my workdays typically end with plenty of daylight remaining, I have had the opportunity to explore Stockholm with my friends after work and on the weekends. This past weekend, we decided to have a staycation in the city instead of traveling elsewhere, and it ended up being one of my favorite experiences so far. We enjoyed authentic Swedish meatballs, visited an amusement park, and even spent time on a boat where we were able to swim and enjoy the warm summer weather. These experiences have helped me build friendships, immerse myself in Swedish culture, and create memories that I will always associate with this internship.
Overall, while the ambiguity of a quieter summer work environment initially made me feel uncertain, it ultimately became an opportunity for both professional and personal growth. By communicating openly with my colleagues and taking initiative, I was able to gain more meaningful work experience and contribute to projects that interested me. At the same time, I have learned to appreciate the importance of balance by embracing everything Stockholm has to offer outside of the workplace. This internship has shown me that growth doesn’t always come from having a full schedule—it often comes from adapting to new environments, asking questions, and making the most of every opportunity that is available.
