One aspect of Czech workplace culture that at first took some getting used to was how quiet the office is throughout the day. Compared to workplaces I have experienced in the United States, there is less casual conversation, and people remain focused on their own tasks. At first, I interpreted this atmosphere as people being less open to interaction. Now I realized that this was simply the office culture. Everyone is friendly and respectful, but there is a greater emphasis on allowing coworkers to concentrate without unnecessary interruptions. I have found that whenever I have a question or need help, everyone is more than willing to answer it. My coworkers have been very approachable and I have become much more comfortable reaching out to them. Understanding this difference has helped me realize that communication styles can vary across cultures without reflecting how welcoming or supportive people are. Another difference I noticed is the office dress code. The overall attire is much more relaxed than I expected for a professional office environment. Many employees wear casual clothing, especially during the warmer weather, and there is not the same expectation of dressing formally every day that I have seen in some workplaces in the United States. I still find myself dressing slightly more business casual. However, seeing how relaxed the dress code is has taught me that professionalism is demonstrated more through work ethic, reliability, and respect for others.
Outside of the workplace, one challenge has been adjusting to the recent heat wave. The temperatures have been much hotter than I expected, especially since many buildings and apartments do not have air conditioning like they often do in the United States. The first few days were definitely an adjustment, but I have adapted by staying hydrated, wearing lighter clothing, and planning outdoor activities for the morning or evening when it is cooler. Although the heat has been intense, it has been manageable, and it has become another reminder that adapting to a new environment often means adjusting to everyday lifestyle differences.
Overall, these experiences have helped me become more flexible and open-minded. I have learned not to make assumptions based on first impressions and instead take the time to understand why workplaces operate the way they do. Adapting to a quieter office, a more relaxed professional environment, and even the unusually hot weather has made me more confident in my ability to adjust to new situations. I believe these experiences will help me work effectively with people from different cultures throughout my career.
