More Than an Internship

At the beginning of this experience, my main goals were to gain practical marketing experience in the sports industry, strengthen my content creation skills, and become more confident working in a professional environment. I also wanted to experience what it was like to live and work in another country while learning how businesses and sports organizations operate outside of the United States. Looking back, I believe I accomplished all of these goals. During my internship with the Sydney Blue Sox, I created promotional videos, designed advertisements for the Sydney Blue Sox Academy, and developed content ideas for a local sponsor. Through these projects, I improved my skills using CapCut, TikTok, and Adobe InDesign while gaining a better understanding of how social media can be used strategically to engage fans and promote a brand. I also became much more comfortable taking initiative, accepting feedback, and adapting my work to meet organizational needs.

One of the most valuable outcomes of this internship was the development of transferable skills that will benefit me throughout the rest of my time at Pitt Business and in my future career. Communication was one of the biggest areas of growth, as I learned how to collaborate with supervisors and coworkers from different backgrounds while clearly presenting ideas and incorporating feedback. I also strengthened my adaptability by adjusting to a new workplace, navigating cultural differences, and managing changing priorities. Time management and organization became essential as I balanced my internship responsibilities with coursework and exploring Sydney. These are skills that will continue to help me in future internships, group projects, and eventually in a full-time marketing or sports management role.

Studying abroad also helped me grow personally in ways I did not expect. Living in Australia pushed me outside of my comfort zone and gave me greater independence and confidence. I learned how to navigate unfamiliar environments, embrace cultural differences, and become more open-minded when working with people who have different perspectives and communication styles. I also became more willing to ask questions, seek new opportunities, and trust my own abilities when faced with unfamiliar situations. This experience reinforced my passion for pursuing a career in sports marketing by showing me how universal the sports industry is and how marketing strategies can connect with fans across different cultures. I am returning to the University of Pittsburgh with stronger professional skills, greater confidence in my abilities, and a broader perspective on both business and the world. This experience has been one of the most rewarding opportunities of my college career, and I know the lessons I learned abroad will continue to influence both my academic and professional future long after I graduate.
