My name is Austin Vernon, and I am a first-year student at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in Business Analytics and Finance. I chose this path because I enjoy solving problems, working with data, and understanding how financial decisions shape the success of businesses. My long-term goal is to pursue a career in corporate finance, with the aspiration of eventually becoming a Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Throughout high school, I developed skills in leadership, teamwork, and perseverance through football, tennis, coding, and my work experience. These experiences taught me the importance of communication, discipline, and adaptability, all of which I hope to continue strengthening during my time at Pitt.
Academically, I am excited to combine analytical thinking with financial knowledge to better understand how businesses operate and make strategic decisions. The Business Analytics and Finance program provides the opportunity to build technical skills while also developing the critical thinking and decision-making abilities needed in today’s business world. Professionally, I hope to gain practical experience through internships, networking opportunities, and leadership involvement that will prepare me for a successful career in finance. I believe that Pitt offers the ideal environment to challenge myself, grow as a student, and prepare for the future.
One of the opportunities I am most excited about is being a part of the Global Haller Fellowship Program. I joined the program because I wanted to expand my perspective beyond the classroom and learn how business is practiced in different cultures around the world. In today’s global economy, understanding international markets and working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds are essential skills for business leaders. The fellowship gives me the opportunity to develop these skills while building meaningful relationships with other motivated students who share similar goals.
Personally, I hope the Global Haller Fellowship helps me become more confident, open-minded, and culturally aware through new experiences and international engagement. Academically, I look forward to applying what I learn in my Business Analytics and Finance courses to real-world global challenges. Professionally, I believe the program will strengthen my leadership abilities, expand my professional network, and prepare me to work in an increasingly interconnected business environment. I am excited to grow both inside and outside the classroom and take full advantage of everything the fellowship has to offer.
