When I first arrived in Berlin, I expected this experience to be primarily about gaining technical skills and adding professional experience to my résumé. While I certainly accomplished those goals through my internship at w3.hub, I am leaving with something much more valuable: a new perspective on myself, my future, and what it means to work and live in an international environment. Looking back on the past two months, I can confidently say that studying and interning abroad has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my college career.
I am incredibly grateful to the donors who made this opportunity possible. Their generosity allowed me to experience something that would have been difficult to pursue otherwise. Because of their support, I was able to immerse myself in a new culture, work alongside professionals from different countries, and challenge myself in ways I never could have anticipated. This experience has broadened my understanding of the world while giving me memories and lessons that will stay with me long after graduation.
Personally, I have grown the most in my confidence and independence. Living in another country meant learning how to navigate unfamiliar situations every day, from using public transportation to adjusting to cultural differences and solving problems without relying on the comfort of home. At first, those challenges felt intimidating, but over time they became opportunities to grow. I became more adaptable, more comfortable stepping outside my comfort zone, and more willing to take initiative. I also learned that growth often comes from uncertainty. Every challenge I faced made me more resilient and more confident in my ability to handle whatever comes next.
Academically, this experience reinforced why I chose to study Data Science. During my internship at w3.hub, I worked with real datasets rather than classroom examples. I cleaned and organized data, analyzed event performance, and helped develop tools that could support business decisions. Working with actual company data showed me that the process is often much messier than what we see in class. I learned the importance of asking thoughtful questions, validating data, communicating findings clearly, and thinking critically about how analytics can create value for an organization. These experiences helped bridge the gap between theory and practice and gave me a much stronger appreciation for how data science is applied in the real world.
Professionally, I gained valuable experience working in an international startup environment. I collaborated with colleagues from different backgrounds, adapted to a fast-paced workplace, and learned how to contribute to projects with real business impact. I also discovered that technical skills alone are not enough. Communication, flexibility, teamwork, and the ability to learn quickly are just as important as coding or data analysis. Seeing how professionals approached challenges and collaborated across cultures has influenced how I want to develop as I begin preparing for internships and eventually my career.
One of the biggest takeaways from this program is that meaningful learning extends far beyond the classroom. Some of the most important lessons came from conversations with coworkers, exploring different neighborhoods, traveling throughout Europe, and experiencing everyday life in Berlin. Being surrounded by people with different perspectives challenged many of my assumptions and encouraged me to become more open-minded. It reminded me that there are often multiple ways to solve a problem and that diverse perspectives make teams stronger.
As I return to the University of Pittsburgh, I hope to bring this mindset with me. I want to become more involved in opportunities that allow me to apply my technical skills to real-world problems while continuing to build relationships with people from different backgrounds. I also hope to encourage other students to consider studying abroad because of the personal and professional growth it offers. This experience has shown me that taking risks and embracing unfamiliar situations can lead to incredible opportunities.
Looking toward my future career, I plan to build on everything I learned this summer. My goal is to pursue a career in data science where I can combine analytical thinking with practical problem-solving to help organizations make better decisions. The experience I gained in Berlin has given me greater confidence in my abilities and has motivated me to continue learning new technologies and expanding my skills. More importantly, it has reminded me to remain curious, adaptable, and open to new experiences throughout my career.
Although this chapter has come to an end, I know its impact will continue long into the future. I am deeply thankful to everyone who made this opportunity possible, especially the donors whose generosity allowed me to participate. This program has shaped me personally, academically, and professionally, and I will carry its lessons with me as I continue my journey at Pitt and beyond.
