What Does Professional Success Look Like in Korea?

Before coming to Korea, I mostly thought about professional success in terms of individual achievement. In the United States, we often think that successful employees are people who stand out, take initiative, share their ideas, and eventually move into higher positions. During my internship at a small company in Korea, I have started to realize that professional success can look different depending on the culture. From what I have seen, Korean workplace culture puts a lot of importance on respect, dedication, teamwork, and understanding your role within the company. While these qualities are also important in the United States, they can show up differently in the workplace.

One of the biggest things I have noticed is the importance of respect. Respect is already a major part of Korean culture, especially when it comes to age, experience, and seniority. I have noticed that this carries over into the workplace as well. Being a good employee is not just about getting your work done. It is also about knowing how to communicate with your coworkers and supervisors and treating them with respect.

This is something I had to become more aware of during my internship. In the United States, workplaces can sometimes be pretty informal. Employees might call their managers by their first names or speak to them almost the same way they would speak to another coworker. In Korea, there seems to be more awareness of someone’s position in the company. How you communicate with someone can be just as important as what you are saying. This does not mean that employees cannot disagree or share their opinions, but there seems to be more thought put into how those opinions are expressed.

Another quality that I have noticed is dedication. At my internship, the employees who seem successful are people who are committed to their work and to the company. They are reliable, put effort into what they are doing, and are willing to help when something needs to get done. I think this is especially noticeable because I work at a smaller company. When there are fewer employees, everyone’s work matters and it is easier to see how each person contributes to the company.

This also made me think about the importance of the group in Korean culture. Being successful does not always mean being the loudest person in the room or getting the most recognition. Sometimes it means being someone that your coworkers can rely on. An employee can be successful by doing their job well, respecting the people around them, and helping the entire team reach its goals.

I think this is a little different from how success is often viewed in the United States. American work culture tends to focus more on the individual. People are encouraged to speak up, show what they are capable of, and take credit for their accomplishments. There is also less of a negative feeling around leaving one company for another if it means getting a better opportunity. Personal career growth is often seen as a major part of being successful.

However, I do not think Korean and American ideas of professional success are completely different. Both cultures value hard work, reliability, and being good at your job. The difference is more about which qualities are emphasized. From my experience so far, American workplaces seem to value independence and individual achievement more, while Korean workplaces seem to put more emphasis on respect, dedication, and being a good member of the team.

My internship has made me realize that there is not one definition of a successful employee. A lot of it depends on the culture and the workplace you are in. Working at a small company in Korea has shown me that success is not only about getting promoted, making more money, or being recognized for your individual accomplishments. It can also be about how you treat the people you work with, how much effort you put into your responsibilities, and whether your coworkers can depend on you. This experience has helped me understand that working in another country is not just about learning how to do a job. It is also about learning how to work with people who may have different expectations and ideas about what it means to be successful.
