First Week in Sydney

Hi Everyone!

After too many romantic comedies, some not so terrible packaged food, and a total of twenty hours on the plane I’ve arrived in Sydney! Honestly, the plane rides were not too bad for anyone worried about the distance. Shortly after my arrival to the Sydney airport I caught a taxi with my friend to Urbanest (my apartment for the next three months). The taxis were very easy to find when exiting the airport and the ride was a short fifteen to twenty minutes away. After arriving at my apartment, I was greeted by the CAPA staff who showed me to my flat. The entire apartment is very modern with a full gym, mail area, recreational space for watching TV, a foosball table and study space. My flat itself holds eight girls including myself. There are four rooms with two people per room which include beds, desks, LOTS of storage space and a private bathroom. In my flat there are five girls who go to Pitt, one girl who goes to Stonehill College, one girl who goes to University of Minnesota at Twin Cities and my roommate who goes to the State University of New York at Oswego. I love that I was placed in a flat with students from a mix of universities and that we are able to experience being in a new country together.

The neighborhood I am living in is called Ultimo located on Wattle Street. The entire neighborhood itself reminds me a little of Oakland (but a lot nicer looking). It is in the business district of Sydney and is home to the University of Sydney and the University of Technology Sydney. A wide range of food options, a large shopping center called Broadway, my school and public transportation is just minutes away.

There are some quirky ecofriendly measures taken in my apartment that have taken some time to get used to and I’ve lost count of the times I have walked or stopped on the “wrong side” of the sidewalk, but overall I think I am starting to get the hang of things. Even though I have only been in Sydney for a few days it feels as though I can call this place my home. I am so excited to spend the next three months here learning, interning, exploring and enjoying all that Sydney has to offer.

Till Next Time!
