Next Stop: London

Hi everyone! My name is Amika Patel and I am a rising junior at the University of Pittsburgh. I am majoring in Accounting and Finance and minoring in Economics. I grew up in Rochester, New York and recently moved to New York City. At the University of Pittsburgh, I am involved in many organizations including Pitt Nrityamala, South Asian Student Association, and Dhirana. Pitt Nrityamala is the school’s competitive Indian classical dance team. We have competed at Georgia Tech, George Mason University, University of Maryland, and many others over my past two years on the team. I am also part of Dhirana which is the Indian classical dance competition that Pitt hosts. This organization helps classical dancers, like myself, continue their passion for dance and also raises money for the Birmingham Free Clinic. Within the two years that I have been a part of this organization we have raised over $10,000 each year.

The program that I have chosen is the Global Business Institute: London International Accounting Issues. This study abroad will broaden my college experience and allow me to immerse myself into a different culture. My time abroad will allow me to grow in ways that that a normal classroom setting would not provide me. Through this program I will be able to visit different accounting firms and learn about international accounting and business. I believe that a study abroad program will help me develop both personally and academically. There are many things that I will accomplish in this program. I will gain a better understanding of business culture and practices in London. This will have great value to me because I will implement it in my professional career in America. Getting firsthand experience in dealing with specific accounting procedures will help me determine the specific path I would like to take within accounting. I will also develop my social networking skills by interacting with professionals from a variety of different backgrounds. Also, this study abroad will help me develop new skills from living independently to working and studying in a new environment. I will learn how to communicate with others with different backgrounds and assimilate into a new culture. In addition to this I will have the opportunity to participate in an internship. I believe this will allow me to further expose myself to diverse backgrounds and people, and provide me with skills that will help me in the future.

In addition to academics, I hope to travel outside of London and take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way. I am very excited to see what London has to offer and I can’t wait to explore the beautiful city!

Thank you,

Amika Patel
