An American in Berlin: Pre-Departure

Hello all! My name is Laura Howe, and I am a rising junior at the University of Pittsburgh, studying Politics, Philosophy, and Economics, with a minor in German. Beyond the classroom, I am a sister of Delta Phi Epsilon and a staff writer for The Pitt News. Beyond all responsibilities I love reading, writing, and watching too much Netflix. I also love my friends, and I’m going to miss them a bunch this summer- but I’m also very excited to meet my new co-workers and fellow students who will be participating in this program with me!

I’m much looking forward to this trip, as I have never left the country before! Hopefully I have learned enough German during my past two years at Pitt to impress the locals. I have never gotten the chance to practice with native speakers who weren’t my professors, so this is very exciting. It is particularly exciting to live in Berlin, which I have heard is a vibrant city for young professionals- because it is modern and not too expensive. In my German class this past semester we read a novel that took place in East Berlin, when the city was still divided, so the history of the city is very interesting to me as well.

Over the course of my time in Berlin I will be working at Awin, a global affiliate marketing company. Its headquarters are in the center of the Potsdamer Platz, which has lots of historical sites nearby such as the Reichstag (German parliament) and the Tiergarten. Definitely won’t mind the commute too much! I expect the public transportation will be even easier to navigate than Pittsburgh- mainly because it’s actually on time! I’ll be making weekly blogs during my time overseas- and I can’t wait to see how everything goes! Tschüss!
