This weekend I went on a trip to Chamonix Mont-Blanc, a small town located in the heart of the French Alps. Evident by the name, this town is home to Mont Blanc, the highest mountain peak in the Alps. In fact, it is the highest point in all over Europe west of Russia. Needless to say, this place was absolutely beautiful and awe inspiring. Although my weekend was filled with great adventure and sight seeing, the journey posed a few challenges along the way, which made the trip stressful at times and definitely wore me out in the end.
My journey officially began early on Saturday morning… very early. I was leaving my home stay at 4:00 AM to catch a night bus to the train station so that I could take the train to the airport. After finding my bus stop and making my way towards the train station, I had just missed my train and had to wait a half-hour for the next one. This made me pretty nervous because I was cutting my flight a bit close at this point. But sure enough, the next train took me to the airport with just enough time to go through security and hop on my plane to Geneva.
Once I arrived in Geneva, I had about an hour wait before I would be meeting my bus at the arrivals section to take me to Chamonix (about 1 hour outside of Geneva). However, to my dismay, my bus did not show up. Panicked, I went to the airport information desk to find out what happened. They informed me that this happens from time to time and that I would need to take a train to Geneva city center and find the bus station and get on the bus from there. Oh, and the bus leaves in 10 minutes.
At this point, I was sure that I would not make it to Chamonix. The second my train stopped in the city center, I was running toward what I was hoping was the bus station. Lucky enough, I was right and I made it to my bus just in time! With this fiasco behind me, I was able to enjoy the stunning views driving into Chamonix.
Since I was only there for the weekend, I knew I needed to take advantage of all of my time in Chamonix, so I decided that I would go for a hike on Saturday afternoon despite how tired I was. I had always wanted to hike in the Alps. I had researched a few trails before coming and decided on one and was on my way. The hike was really tough but the views did not disappoint!
I had planned to hike again on Sunday but upon getting up in the morning and realizing how sore I was, I decided I would take it a bit easier, so I spend the day around the town of Chamonix and took a lift up to a mountain peak to enjoy the view. As the day came to an end, I made my way to the Chamonix bus station to wait for my bus. I had very little faith that my bus would arrive, but this time it did. The journey on the way back went much smoother, and I was coming back to my home stay just after midnight Sunday night.
Ideally, I would have taken the train from Paris to Chamonix, but with the rail strikes going on in France I did not want to risk being stuck in Chamonix. Although the weekend was exhausting, it was an amazing experience and I am grateful for it. I am also oddly grateful for the nightmare of a journey I had to Chamonix, because I feel that I grew from the experience and learned a bit about what it is like to travel solo.
