Day 11: Social Entrepreneurship

It’s been a while since we stayed in room 2500 of Sennott Square for the whole entire day. It felt weird to not go from the classroom to the city but we are almost there to go out into the world. Instead, we finished chapter 6 and listened to 3 guest speakers about social entrepreneurship.

First speaker was Dr. Eliada Griffin-EL from Robert Morris University. She lectured about social entrepreneurship, specifically targeting the true meaning of poverty. She started her lecture by asking us about our own definition of ‘social entrepreneurship’. I liked how this provoked our thoughts and start thinking about what it truly means to be a social entrepreneur. She gave us her favorite definition which was, “process involving the innovative use and combination of resources to pursue opportunities to catalyze social change and or address social needs.” Before she came to class, I concluded that an individual has to be completely focused and fully understand the social problem he or she wants to fix with a lasting sustainable solution. She addressed that poverty is the absence of freedom. Poverty is the area of social entrepreneurship and the way for change is to expand freedom everywhere. She also emphasized the fact that not every aspect of poverty is visible. There are sides that we can’t see and those are the problems that also need to be fixed and never forgotten.

Last activity we did today was a personality test with Pitt’s very own Dr. Jones. This test analyzed our personality assigning each of us a color between blue, gold, orange, and green. I added my scores up and found out I was ‘blue’. As Dr. Jones described this personality trait, I was initially surprised that I had blue as my dominant color. However,  when he said personal, peaceful, and enthusiastic, I realized this color does, in a way, describe me. For me, I am a team player and do not tend to lead often. However, I collaborate and work well with people and I think that is a good quality to have in order to find success with a team. IMG_5894
