Globalization has become a buzz word in the business world. Globalization is the process taken by businesses to make connections across the world with other companies, families and communities. The pros of globalization include the development of a worldwide community, the crossover and learning of different cultures, and the expansion of sharing information with those we would otherwise be unable to communicate with. Additionally, obvious economic growth in terms of gross domestic product for the country that is being globalized, for more products and information are being produced and shared within the borders of the country. The cons of globalization include political tensions, legality in terms of what actions are permitted in what ways in other countries, and whether or not developing countries want the influence of first world countries. Also, a debate results from the relocation of native residents who have lived in the city their entire lives. This issue is especially prevalent in Ireland.
Ireland has become a focus for globalization, and has grown exponentially as a result of it. Google based their operations for Ireland, the Middle East and Africa in the developing area of Dublin, known as the Docklands. However, right by Google’s office-space is a small neighborhood known as the East Wall, and there are conflicts between the residents who have lived there before all of the sudden developments and the cost of living in that area. These one bedroom living areas are skyrocketing in value, some to the tune of over 500,000 euros, but the residents cannot happily take this money and move out because they cannot drive as a result of easily accessing their necessities by foot.
On the other hand, tech companies are moving to Ireland due to its connection with the European Union and extremely low corporate tax rate (12.5%, while the U.S. sits at 21%). Ireland is loaded with a passionate, young work force to fill the jobs provided by these tech companies. Additionally, the tourist industry is booming in Dublin due to its rich history with an enormous business development on the other side of the River Liffey.
Overall, I believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages when it comes to globalization in Dublin. The economic boom is helping the city thrive, although the boom has to slow in the future due to limited resources and space. The main disadvantage, however is that the cost of living in Ireland has skyrocketed, which drives workers from outside the country who want to work abroad to other countries that are being affected by globalization as well, such as Germany.
