Today, I got to adventure through Glendalough and Kilkenny, two smaller towns in Ireland.
In the morning, we arrived at Glendalough and watched a sheep herding demonstration at a sheep farm. The family who owns the farm allows tourists to come and view their property. They have more than 200 sheep scattered all around their fields.
We were able to hear about how sheep are raised; the process is very tedious and takes 24 hours a day every day. The father and his two boys work the sheep farm alongside their sheepdogs. Today, their best-trained sheepdog, Bruce, herded in the sheep from the fields.
After the farm, we stopped at Glendalough. Our tour guide walked us through the old church, cemetery, and fields and explained the history behind each. The church is crumbling down and no longer has a roof, but it is still consecrated and a few Catholic Masses still take place.
There are two lakes in Glendalough, so our group hiked to both (they are both next to each other). The upper lake was absolutely beautiful. The views were incredible as the sun peaked in through the mountains surrounding the lake. There were hiking trails through the mountains but we did not have enough time to hike through the area.
After Glendalough, we stopped at Kilkenny, a medieval town that dates back thousands of years. Today, it has been modernized, except for the few tourist attractions. I visited the Kilkenny Castle, Cathedral, and also climbed up the bell tower, which is about 100 feet tall.
Kilkenny was interesting, but I liked Glendalough better.
Overall, it was a great day. I like the Cliffs of Moher the best so far in terms of scenery, but today was still awesome. I’m excited for tomorrow.
