As I have mentioned in my previous blogs I chose to partake in an internship here in Sydney. I am interning at a small Australian health foods company called Naked Foods. They have about 18 stores around all different parts of Australia and they are expanding. I work in the main office with 4 other people. There is a marketing manager who I work closely with, the finance manager, a project manager, and the CEO. So it is a small office but everyone I work with is really nice. I have really enjoyed my time there so far and I feel as though this is because of the culture of Australia. As I said in a previous blog everybody here is very laid back and very friendly and this translates into the work place. Here in Australia there is no real hierarchy in the workplace and all my friends that are doing internships have said the same thing. Although I am an intern and I am new with the lowest position in the office I am still treated just as everybody else which is very welcoming.
When I first started at Naked Foods I felt like I connected really well with everybody in the office. It also helps that everybody in our office is very young so it was pretty easy but the fact that they treated me like I had always been there really took any nerves that I was feeling away. For example, I mentioned that I have been working pretty closely with the marketing manager and she is only 23 so only a couple years older than me and we have become pretty close over my time here and it makes it much easier to communicate with her about any issues I am having on the tasks that she gives me.
So far I really have not had any obstacles with my internship. Everybody has been very welcoming and helpful with everything that I have done. If I were to give any advice to anyone that is going to be participating in an internship in Australia it would be to not be afraid to put yourself out there. Everyone there is going to take you in with open arms and they are happy to have you be a part of their team. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it!
I have really enjoyed working with this team, I am really glad that I was paired up with such a great group of people. I am looking forward to continuing this great relationship and working with them for the remainder of my time here.
