Gearing Up for Buenos Aires

Hello! My name is Olivia Newport and I will be participating in the GBI: Buenos Aires program in Spring 2019. I am a Junior pursuing a Marketing major, Digital Media certificate, and International Business certificate with a concentration in Spanish. Outside of class, I am involved in the Pitt Chapter of the American Marketing Association, Panther Swim Club, and Animal Lovers Club. Aside from these, I enjoy checking out different restaurants around Pittsburgh, spending time with my dog Presley, and of course… traveling!

This past semester I worked in the Office of Student Affairs as a Marketing and Communications Intern. I’ve also interned in a marketing capacity with the Erie Humane Society and Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership. Through these roles I’ve been able to gain experience in writing, graphic design, and event planning. Moving forward, I hope to work in a communications position for an international company. I’ve always been passionate about environmental sustainability and animal advocacy, so I’d like to work for an organization that is involved with these causes.

I wanted to select a study abroad program in a Spanish speaking country in order to improve my Spanish and help me reach my goal of fluency. With that said, I knew I had to choose between Spain and somewhere in Central America or South America. After consulting my friends, family, and the Pitt Business Study Abroad Office, I felt that I would better enhance my Spanish in South America over Spain. Furthermore, discovering that Pitt Business had a program in Buenos Aires (BA) opened my eyes to the possibilities in Argentina, somewhere that I’d never really considered beforehand.

After further research, I got really excited about the prospect of living in BA for a whole semester. Knowing that I would be able to complete my International Business certificate was an added bonus that pushed me to pull the trigger on GBI: Buenos Aires. While studying at Universidad Austral, I will be able to take business courses alongside students with a variety of backgrounds and complete an internship with an Argentine company.

I have many goals going into my semester abroad. An obvious objective is to work towards completing my different degrees. Another main goal is to achieve Spanish language fluency. I am hoping that my homestay with a local family and spanish-speaking internship will help me reach this goal. Aside from this, there are many soft skills that I would like to obtain this spring. I believe that living and working in a new place will encourage me to become more flexible, a valuable quality in both personal and professional settings. In additon, I hope to increase my global competency. Because I would like to work for international company, having a global competency is essesntial. Lastly, I intend to explore as much as Buenos Aires as possible, and fully immerse myself in the whole experience.

I can’t wait to kick off this next semester in Argentina, and look forward to meeting the other students and Universidad Austral faculty!
