Hi everyone! I can’t believe it’s been one month since I first landed in Sydney. I guess time really does fly when you’re having fun! As promised in my last post, I wanted to update everyone on my internship, classes, and what else I’ve explored in Sydney.
I am a Media and Communications Intern at Cancer Council NSW. Cancer Council NSW is the largest cancer charity in NSW and is working to see a cancer free future. On my first day of work, I could immediately tell that this company was a great place to work. I was assigned a mentor who I will be directly reporting to, but am working with the entire CEPD Metro Sydney Team across both of their fundraising and mission divisions. My mentor is amazing and we meet often to discuss my goals and objectives for the duration of my internship and we created a development plan with specific action steps listed in order to achieve my goals. My first assignments were doing real work, not just typical intern tasks. I was tasked with pitching media releases for some upcoming programs that we are running to local papers. I had the opportunity to talk with a cancer survivor who was willing to share their story to inspire others. I’ve also been able to take on other various graphic design and marketing projects to help me reach my professional goals. Every day I am working on something new and I love that variety. Not to mention the office is just a 30 minute walk from my apartment, with great views of Hyde Park and the central business district- I usually walk to and from work every day just to take in the city. Overall, my first weeks working at Cancer Council NSW have beyond exceeded my expectations and I am excited to see where the rest of the semester takes me.
In addition to interning, I am also taking 3 marketing elective courses: International Marketing, Managing Global Supply Chains and Advertising and Promotions. I really enjoy all of my classes we participate in group projects, take field trips throughout the city and learn about relevant topics in the Australian business environment. Each class meets once a week which leaves room in my schedule to work 2 full days and a half day at my internship site every week and my weekends free to explore.
Speaking of exploring, my friends and I just came back from our first weekend trip to Port Stephens (picture attached). Port Stephens is located about 2 and a half hours north of Sydney. It was very accessible by public transportation and we had a blast during our 2 day 2 night stay. Port Stephens is a quaint, coastal town so it was really nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of Sydney city life. We went hiking on Mount Tomaree which had the most breathtaking views. We hung out at Zenith Beach, a private and secluded beach surrounded by mountains on either side. We were also able to explore the sand dunes in the area which was really neat to see.
And the adventures don’t stop there! Next Monday I will be traveling to New Zealand for a week during our spring break. We will be doing a tour of south NZ exploring Christchurch, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Mt Cook and more! Later in March, I will be going snorkeling and scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef, going on a weekend long surf camp, sleeping in tents overnight at the Taronga Zoo, and doing a weekend trip to Melbourne.
Lastly, I’ll leave you all with a fun fact about Aussie slang: many Sydneysiders ask “how are you going” in place of “how are you doing”. At first, phrases like these really took me off guard but now I catch myself incorporating these said phrases in everyday conversation.
