Introduction: GBI Sydney Sports Business

My name is William D. Stein, but I go by Will, and I have the pleasure of studying abroad this summer with Pitt Business. The program I am participating in is called the Global Business Institute: Sydney Sports Business. I am a rising Junior and I am from the northern suburbs of Chicago, IL. I am majoring in Marketing, minoring in U.S. History. On top of those, I am pursuing certificates in Business Analytics, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Sports Management. I am also trying to get involved in behavioral research.

I love all Chicago sports (except the White Sox), but my favorite team is the Chicago Cubs. One of the best moments of my life was when the Cubs broke the curse and won the World Series for the first time in 108 years. I got extremely lucky and I was able to go to game 4 of the 2016 World Series.

Outside of sports and the classroom, I am a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and I am on the executive board of the Pitt Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC). I was just elected to be the Alumni Chairman for the Phi Delta Theta Pennsylvania Iota chapter for the 2019-20 school year. In February, I was also elected to be the Secretary for IFC, which oversees all 18 Fraternity chapters at Pitt.

For the past eleven summers, I have attended and worked at Greenwoods Camp for Boys in Decatur, MI. The past two summers, I worked as a camp counselor. I taught sailing and swimming to over 900 kids and loved every moment of it. This will be my first summer in a long time not spent at camp, however, I am incredibly excited to study abroad in Sydney.

This will be my first time studying abroad and my first time in Australia, but I have always wanted to go. I chose this program because I am incredibly interested in sports marketing and I wanted to gain hands on experience in the industry. I do not know what exactly I want to do after I graduate, but I want to find something I love doing, which is why I am pursuing so many certificates. Through the courses I have already taken, I have found out that I love data analytics, and I also love consumer psychology. I believe studying abroad will enable me to find more things to be passionate about.

I also believe having an internship and taking classes will set me apart to future employees. Not many people get opportunities like this, and I am very motivated to make the most of my experience. My brother was very fortunate to study abroad twice. He spent a semester in London and a summer in Athens, and he loved both experiences. I want to have a similar experience to him, which is why I am going abroad with a very open mind. I want to try and do everything I can while I am abroad. I believe studying abroad will be a life changing experience and I cannot wait for it to start.
