My name is Ryan Carr and I will be spending my summer in Dublin, Ireland for the International Internship Program! I am currently finishing up my Sophomore year here at University of Pittsburgh, and I am majoring in Human Resources Management and Finance. I am also pursuing concentrations in Music History and Psychology. My choice of majors began forming in high school while I was working at Jersey Mike’s Subs. Getting to deal with a wide array customers and employees led to my interest in Human Resources, and working with the store’s financials not surprisingly led to my interest in Finance. Aside from business studies, I’ve always taken interest in music and psychology, so finding a way to incorporate these subjects into my academics was very important. I am hoping to use these studies to one day end up working in the music industry!
At Pitt, I am a member of the professional business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi. I was able to serve on the Executive Committee as Webmaster. Being a part of this organization for over a year has provided me with great connections and amazing knowledge – some of which I hope to use this summer! I am also currently working as a Marketing and Promotions Intern for Stage AE, a music venue right here in Pittsburgh. I have thoroughly enjoyed working around music and promoting and advertising different events for Stage AE. As a result, I hope to continue this internship in the fall as well.
Coming from a very music-oriented family, it was almost a no brainer for me to want to work in the music industry. My dad and almost all of my siblings know how to play at least one instrument, and I have been playing the drums since the beginning of high school. Our music background makes for great family jam sessions! I also enjoy skateboarding and working out. I believe maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very important, so these activities help me stay in shape, and they are great head clearers as well! In addition, I love cooking and, luckily, love traveling! I have been to Ireland once and also to Greece several times to visit family. I am blessed to have been able to travel so much already, and am excited to see what this summer holds.
I chose the International Internship Program because I will be able to spend time in a city I love and have a multitude of opportunities to improve myself personally, academically, and professionally. Though I have been to Ireland before to visit family, I am really looking forward to being on my own there as a business student. I am very excited to not only increase my understanding of the Human Resources function in a company, but also take some of these professional learnings back to classes here at Pitt. I can’t wait to be able to add on to my experiences abroad, learn more about the Irish culture, and take in as much as possible about business in Ireland. I look forward to updating you all on my journey!
