Countdown to Sydney, Australia

Hi everyone! My name is Sara Shriber and I am currently a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh in the College of Business Administration. I plan to major in Marketing and Supply Chain Management along with a certificate in International Business. This summer, I will be travelling to Sydney, Australia for the Sports Business Program through the Global Business Institute. While abroad, I will have a part-time internship and take Sports Marketing.

I am from Wexford PA, which is about 30 minutes north of the University of Pittsburgh. I decided to come to Pitt because of the many opportunities in Pittsburgh and abroad. Ever since I travelled to Spain in high school, I have had a strong interest to study abroad. I was able to learn so much by having first-hand experiences and I wanted to have a similar experience during my college career.

Sports have always been an integral part of my life. Ever since I was seven years old, I played tennis. I played for my high school tennis team and then joined the Pitt Club Tennis Team during my freshman year of college. In the future, I would love to work for USTA (United States Tennis Association) or do Sports Marketing for a sports team. I chose this program as it matches my post-graduation goals and combines my love of sports and business.

This year, I joined SBA and it has grown my interest even more within the sports industry. I have learned a lot about different job opportunities in the sports industry, and I am excited to have first-hand experiences this summer. In addition to SBA, I am a member of Best Buddies, an organization that provides friendships and employment opportunities to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

I hope to grow personally, academically, and professionally while abroad. I hope to obtain cultural competence from being immersed into a new place. In order to do this, I need to keep an open mind and push myself outside my comfort zone. I will become more independent and improve my time-management skills. This will allow me to get the most out of my experience abroad. Academically, this program will allow me to see how marketing is incorporated into sports. Australia is known for its sports, and this is the perfect place for me to explore my interest in sports marketing. I am a big sports fan, and I am excited to learn more about the many different sports played in Australia. Professionally, I hope to obtain transferrable workplace skills through my internship. I will be able to learn more about international business and marketing. I will be able to obtain a better sense of a particular career path I want to pursue.

I am very excited to travel to Sydney, Australia and learn more about sports marketing. I have never been to Australia before and I am excited to explore a new place. I know that the six weeks in Australia will be unforgettable, and I can’t wait to share my experiences with everyone.
