Hello! My name is Emma Estabrook and I am just about to finish my second year at Pitt. I am studying finance and business information systems and am a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, the Pitt Club Women’s Soccer team and Pitt Climbing team on campus. I am from Amherst, New Hampshire and am super excited to travel outside of the country for the first time in 6 years to India for an entire month!
When I first heard about this program forming, I knew that I had to try and be a part of it. I started my application the first day they came out and was ecstatic when I heard of my acceptance! Being from New England and just a short drive from the White Mountains hiking and the outdoors have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I love traveling but with a college budget have stuck to touring the United States and not so much internationally. This summer I spent three weeks camping and exploring a lot of different national parks out west with some friends I met at Pitt and have gone on a few other trips with them within the past few years. I have had such an awesome experience planning and going on these adventures on my own that when the opportunity arose for me to do something like travel and backpack through the Himalayas I knew that this was something I would probably never be able do if it wasn’t through a program like this that Pitt was offering.
Since I heard the news that I was actually going to be able to go on this insane experience time has seemed to have flown by. I can’t believe that just one week I will be on a plane to New Delhi! It has been so awesome to be studying outdoor education and different leadership theories in preparation for this course. Although outdoor education is not the career path that I have chosen it has always been a strong interest of mine and I am lucky to be able to study it even a little bit in college. I am excited to apply everything that I am learning not only to my future professional life but my personal life as well!
