Shared Value – People/Planet/Profit: The shared value approach to analysis for business decision-makers has a conceptual focus through perspectives like the “Triple Bottom Line” – in which a manager reviews how a business model addresses issues of People, Planet and Profit. Based on what you see in the 55 second video on Thread International, how is Thread’s business model reflective of People, Planet and Profit:
Thread made its mission one that benefits not only the environment, but also the people living in it. They do everything they can to make the world a better place, not only in the sense of recycling, but actually taking the materials from towns that desperately need it to go away. Like Repreve, Thread International creates clothing and material made of recyclables. However, their business models are slightly different in the way that Thread does more collaboration, while Repreve sells their products to other brands and companies.
Shared Value – Social/Economic/Environmental : The shared value perspective to analysis for business decision-makers through measurement approaches like documenting Social Sustainability, Economic Sustainability and Environmental Sustainability. Based on what you see in the 55 second video on Thread International (also on the website), how does Thread International demonstrate its impact in one (or more) of these areas:
Thread’s business impacts all three of these areas. They provide social sustainability to the people who have the trash all around them. They help create a higher quality of life for these people who have been in some ways forgotten. Thread has also created economic sustainability by creating a successful business model, but also by providing jobs to their workers. And last, it is very obvious that Thread provides environmental stability. They make their materials out of trash that should have been recycled. Thread International is a brand that meets the Triple Bottom Line and is rich in shared value that benefits nearly everyone involved.
Other Examples Like This?: As a future manager facing complex environments, where do you see the utility of either of these approaches to shared value in your future work?
This business can serve as a reminder that just because a business is successful doesn’t mean it can’t be environmentally conscious, as well as beneficial to society and vice versa. Shared value can be found or implemented in just about every company. The challenge is finding a model that can supply shared value to the environment, economy, and society.
