Dublin Diaries | Week 1
Cliffs, Campuses & Kilkenny
Gee what an incredible week!
My first week in Dublin has been amazing, and I’m already starting to feel more settled into life here. The flight over was smooth, and after arriving, our group had dinner together and spent some time walking around Dublin’s city center. It was a great way to start the experience and get an initial feel for the city. I immediately noticed how walkable Dublin is and enjoyed seeing the mix of historic buildings and modern businesses throughout the city.
Over the next few days, we had the chance to explore some of Ireland’s most beautiful locations. One of my favorite experiences so far was visiting Howth Cliffs. The views were incredible, especially during sunset, and it was easily one of the most scenic places I have ever visited. The cliffs rise more than 500 feet above the Irish Sea and offer stunning views of Dublin Bay and the surrounding coastline. Watching the sun set over the water while walking along the cliff paths was definitely a highlight of the week. It was also a great opportunity to spend time with everyone and experience more of Ireland outside of Dublin.
We also spent time getting familiar with University College Dublin (UCD), where we received campus tours and learned more about the facilities and resources available to us throughout the summer. Since UCD will be our home for the next several weeks, it was helpful to become comfortable navigating the campus and learning more about student life there. The campus is much larger than I expected and everyone was so welcoming.
Another memorable experience was our excursion to Kilkenny. The city was incredibly scenic and full of history. We spent the day talking a hike in the morning, walking through the town, and learning more about its cultural significance. Kilkenny is known for its medieval architecture and historic landmarks, and it was interesting to see a different side of Ireland beyond Dublin. We ended the day with a quick lunch before heading back. One thing that has stood out to me throughout the week is how friendly and welcoming the Irish people have been, whether we were asking for help, visiting local businesses, or simply exploring the city. The first week has been filled with opportunities to explore Ireland, meet new people, and begin adjusting to life abroad.
Navigating the Industry | Skills for Success in Asset Management
As for my internship experience, I am working within the asset management and financial services industry. Asset management is a field focused on managing investments and helping individuals, businesses, and institutions achieve their financial goals. It plays an important role in the global economy by allocating capital, managing risk, and creating investment strategies that help clients grow and preserve wealth over time.
To be successful in the asset management industry, professionals need a combination of technical knowledge and strong interpersonal skills. One of the most important skills is financial analysis. Asset managers must be able to evaluate financial statements, analyze market trends, interpret economic data, and make informed investment decisions. Strong quantitative and analytical skills are essential because professionals are constantly assessing large amounts of information to identify opportunities and risks. Risk management is another critical skill within the industry. Financial markets can change rapidly, and investment professionals must be able to understand and manage different types of risk, including market risk, credit risk, and operational risk. The ability to use data effectively and make decisions based on both quantitative analysis and professional judgment is extremely valuable in this field.
In addition to technical skills, communication is equally important. Professionals in asset management regularly interact with clients, colleagues, regulators, and other stakeholders. Being able to explain complex financial concepts in a clear and understandable way helps build trust and supports better decision making. Collaboration is also important because many investment decisions involve input from multiple teams and departments. Another key strength is adaptability. Financial markets are constantly evolving due to economic events, technological advancements, and changing regulations. Successful professionals must stay informed, continuously learn new skills, and remain flexible as the industry changes. Technology is becoming increasingly important in finance, making data analytics and technological fluency valuable competencies as well.
Since I am working in Dublin, there are several competencies that are especially important within Ireland’s financial services industry. Dublin has become one of Europe’s leading financial hubs and is home to many global banks, investment firms, and fintech companies. One area of expertise that is particularly important is understanding European financial regulations. Investment firms operating in Ireland must comply with regulations that govern investment funds, investor protection, and financial reporting. Having knowledge of these regulatory frameworks is essential for professionals working in the industry. Another important competency is understanding ESG investing and sustainable finance. Europe has taken a leading role in promoting sustainability within financial markets, and many firms are incorporating ESG considerations into their investment processes. Professionals who understand these evolving standards will likely have an advantage as sustainable investing continues to grow.
Finally, cultural awareness and the ability to work in an international environment are especially important in Dublin. Because so many global firms operate here, professionals frequently collaborate with colleagues and clients from different countries and backgrounds. Being able to communicate effectively across cultures and adapt to diverse working environments is a valuable skill that can contribute to long term success.
Overall, the asset management industry requires a strong combination of analytical abilities, technical knowledge, communication skills, and adaptability. Dublin’s position as a major international financial center makes it an ideal place to gain exposure to these skills and better understand how finance operates on a global scale. Stay tuned for week 2!!
