My Personal and Professional Development at Pitt

Before I arrived in Pittsburgh two weeks ago, I didn’t really have any clue what I wanted to study or pursue as a career. I still am not sure, but I have a lot more ideas about options and the workforce in general. I didn’t have any experience with how companies operate or what types of jobs are available at different types of businesses. Now, I feel much more knowledgable about how I can progress my education and begin my career. I really enjoyed going to the Gatesman Agency and learning about the account manager position there. The position combined so many different things and opened my eyes to how many different types of jobs there are. I am more confident now that I will be able to find something that I enjoy and am good at.

Personally, I feel much more relaxed about meeting new people and getting around campus in the fall semester. I already know that I have classes in the fall with a few of the people participating in this program, so there will automatically be some friendly faces on the first day. We also met a few students that did this program last year that helped to give a view of how freshman year is. They talked to us about academic advisors, gen eds, professors, fun spots to shop, living in the dorms, and more. All of this information, coming from a student, was helpful and comforting and made me feel more prepared for the fall. I also have made a few friends that will hopefully carry over into my freshman year. This program has definitely helped me get a leg up and it’s only half way over, so I can’t wait to see what the next two weeks hold.
