First Days in Florence!

Hi everyone!  My name is Taylor Heid and I am a rising junior in the College of Business Administration. I am majoring in finance and supply chain management with a certificate in data analytics.  I am an active member of the Phi Beta Lambda professional business organization and Women in Business club.  In my free time in the summer, I enjoy going to the beach and taking walks in nature, and I love going skiing in the winter.  I love trying new foods and am very excited to take advantage of this opportunity in Florence, especially in trying gelato.  I am very excited to be able to explore Florence and learn about other regions of Italy as well.

I am participating in the GBI: Florence program for six weeks this summer.  I chose this program because Florence is a beautiful city home to so many cultures and I felt it would be a fantastic place to be able to immerse myself into a new culture.  When deciding if I wanted to study abroad, I was unsure about being away for an entire semester, and I ultimately decided that six weeks abroad would be the best fit for me.  Additionally, the courses that were offered in the GBI: Florence program really intrigued me.  In my program, I am taking two classes, renaissance art history and analyzing and exploring the global city: Florence, to earn six academic credits.  Specifically, I am able to explore some of my passions outside of my majors, art and history, through the classes I am taking. I am going to historical sites and museums across the city to physically see the artwork and history, which is something I can’t do at my home campus!  I am now over a week into my program and am already having a fantastic time.  I was able to visit the Museo del Duomo with my renaissance art history class and it was beautiful.

It is my goal to become a more well-rounded individual academically, professionally, and personally.  I am striving to come back to Pittsburgh with new perspectives and ideas I have learned and understood from my time abroad, to build upon and use in everyday life.  In my two classes, I am learning about Florentine history and culture by walking to different sites and neighborhoods to explore the culture. It is my goal to become truly immersed in the Florentine culture outside of the city center to fully understand Florence’s culture. I have loved my first week in Florence, and I am so excited for the rest of my journey here!
