Note to Self

Dear (January) Self,

You did it! Your program in London is almost done. You have flown over 13 flights to over 7 different countries, explored the ins-and-outs of London, ate many different types of food, made many new friends, and learned lots along the way.

From Notting Hill to Camden, Shoreditch to Piccadilly, Brighton to Oxford, experiencing London and neighboring cities as a resident and student was a privilege I will be grateful for every day for the rest of my life.

I knew this semester would consist of many personal hardships. Adjusting to a completely new life than the one I am used to in the states left me feeling incredibly vulnerable at times, and I was often unsure of myself. However, I can say wholeheartedly that this challenged me to learn parts about myself and to grow even more.

This personal growth displays itself in examples as small as mastering the Underground services (Bakerloo line supremacy!) or becoming comfortable with solo dates to coffee shops and bookstores after class, but these victories come together to create a sense of confidence and self assurance I will carry with me beyond my time here.

I wish I knew from the beginning that being in the present moment is one of the most important lessons to heed for a study abroad student. From the start all through the end everyone is busy creating checklists, jam-packing their weekends with excess activities to feel as though they made the most of their time in their city. While this is very important, it is also important to take it day by day and appreciate where you are. The semester goes by so quickly and if you are too busy trying to prove yourself “productive” or “accomplished” by making yourself sick with zero time to breathe, I believe the present moment is lost.

For a more positive spin, another thing I wish I knew before studying in London is that you will simply never run out of things to do. In this city, it feels as though the world is at your fingertips and there is so much to learn and experience. For students looking to study in London, take advantage of all the free museums, as well as entertainment, parks, and foods from many different cultures.

I am so devastated at the thought of leaving this beautiful place, but I know so many great adventures are ahead and I am thankful to have developed a new perspective on the world.

And I KNOW I’ll be back.

Best,

(Present) Self
