Introduction

Hello World!

I am Alex Mittereder, a senior Environmental Studies major at the University of Pittsburgh and I will be partaking in the Leadership in the Himalayas program. This program satisfies the field study requirement for my major, and it is the last class I need in order to graduate. I’m honored and glad that I can cap off my undergrad with an exciting program and alongside some other incredible people.

When I was looking for a field study program, I was originally planning on taking a course through the Geology or Earth Sciences department. Unfortunately, the programs that the normal run through Yellowstone were canceled this year. My advisor told me that I would have to find an alternative. Luckily, I stumbled upon this program, which is looking to be a perfect fit!

Aside from being a full time student, I also work part time at Phipps Conservatory as a laborer and I fill any other remaining free time by participating in clubs. I spent this last semester establishing a new student organization called “Safer Streets at Pitt”, which focuses on building more walkable communities and reducing car dependency in Pittsburgh. I served as the event coordinator for the semester and helped organize bringing guest speakers and other various projects

Although my days of leading student organizations is coming to close, I know that the skills and knowledge I will gain from this program will help me in other aspects of my life. I have already gained insight on my own leadership strengths and abilities, as well as on various types of leadership styles. However, I also know that there is still much to be learned, especially outside of traditional classes and lectures. I’m looking forward to the ten day trek through the mountains, which will really put our knowledge and abilities to the test. Personally, I hope that it allows me to gain confidence in myself, especially when it comes to guiding others who may be less experienced with backpacking. I also hope that I can prove to myself that I am capable of leading others, especially through difficult situations. I also hope that this experience teaches me leadership skills which can be applied to my future career either by helping to teach and guide fellow coworkers, or managing a team of people.
