As my semester comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on how fast time has passed and how I’ve changed through this experience. The past few months have been challenging, confusing and overwhelming but also extremely fun, exciting, and rewarding. I am so glad that I chose to go to Tokyo, an unconventional choice for study abroad. I have learned so much about living in Japan, and it feels very bittersweet that I’ll have to return home so soon. The past few months have been an extraordinary adventure filled with challenges such culture shock, language barriers, and traveling solo. However, these experiences have taught me invaluable lessons and transformed me into a more resilient and adventurous person. Studying abroad and traveling throughout Japan has been a transformative experience. Beyond the challenges, I have been captivated by the country’s rich history, stunning landscapes, and cuisine. I have visited ancient temples, hiked through mountains, and indulged in local cuisine such as okonomiyaki, ramen, tonkatsu and gyudon. Each experience has broadened my horizons and deepened my appreciation for Japanese culture. I feel even more encouraged to continue to travel to fully immerse myself in other countries that I’ve never seen before.

Dear Past Emma,
Looking back, I want to reassure you that despite the initial difficulties, this journey will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. Embrace the culture, learn from your mistakes, and cherish every moment. Embrace the discomfort and uncertainty because it is within those moments that you will grow the most. Your time in Japan will shape you to be more resilient, adaptable, and compassionate. Embrace the challenges and truly savor every experience. Don’t be afraid to try new things, even if you’re doing them alone or don’t know what to expect. It’s okay to mess up and it’s okay if things aren’t perfect every day. The memories you will create, the people you meet and the things you will learn will stay with you forever.
With love, Your Future Self
