One of the most discussed differences we’ve found here between the United States and Ireland is their perception of time and being early/late. While America is known for being early for everything, in Ireland being early can be considered rude. We usually will meet somewhere different than the agreed meeting point ahead of time, then go over together right at the time given. To me, this seems a little silly and inefficient, but I can understand how others feel rushed when people are waiting early for you. However, I definitely prefer the American system, as you seem prepared and ready if you arrive at destinations early.
Another big difference is in the small talk and niceties of conversation. In Ireland, you must always be humble and unassuming, almost like a competition for who is the nicest. Comparatively, in the United States many people will talk about their achievements openly, to advertise themselves and impress the people around them. While the politeness of Irish people is a positive part of their culture, I think I would quickly get tired of it, especially when I only would need simple questions answered. However, for the people who have lived here, I’m sure it’s business as always and that it’s easy to do business with.
