Dear Pre-departure Self,
As I sit here in a cafe, nearing the completion of my semester at Kedge Business School in Bordeaux, France, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible growth and transformation this global experience has brought me. If I could reach out to you before you embarked on this adventure, here’s what I’d share about my journey and the valuable lessons learned along the way.
Firstly, the growth I’ve experienced during my time here has been nothing but amazing and full of joy. Immersing myself in a new culture, surrounded by diverse perspectives, has expanded my horizons in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I’ve become more adaptable, open-minded, cultured and I have learned how to navigate unfamiliar situations with confidence and fearlessness.
One of the biggest realizations I’ve had is the importance of embracing the unknown. Stepping out of my comfort zone was terrifying, but it’s in those moments that I have realized that I can in fact do it. Whether it was adapting to a new academic system, mastering a new language, or understanding cultural references, they have contributed significantly to my personal and professional growth. What matters is to put yourself out there and try, no one is going to hold your hand anymore, you are the maker of your own destiny.
Looking back, there are several things I wish I had known before starting this program. I would advise my pre-departure self to be more proactive in reaching out to more people from different backgrounds, cultures and countries. Building relationships with classmates, locals, and faculty members earlier on would have enhanced my experience even further. Networking isn’t just about professional gain; it’s about understanding diverse perspectives and forming lifelong connections and friendships.
Moreover, the global business landscape is what surprised me the most about this program. The exposure to international case studies, guest lectures, and collaborative projects with peers from different countries has brought a new light to my idea of business. In addition to this, every class ties in and teaches us about different sustainability practices which I believe is very valuable. As our generation progresses, we need to start implementing more and more sustainable and recycling ideas into the business world.
Finally, this journey at Kedge Business School has been a life changing experience that goes beyond the classroom. It’s shaped me into a more culturally aware, adaptable, sustainable, and empathetic person, traits that I’ll carry forward into my future travels and experiences.
Cheers,
Maria Cortes
