Our trip to Puerto Rico is less than a week away at this point, and I’m feeling more and more excited. I can’t wait to experience the vibrant culture of Puerto Rico firsthand and contribute to the empowering mission of the non-profit organization Caras con Causa. Our team’s project involves planning and marketing the unique LabCom (community laboratory) to students in the United States as a study abroad program, allowing Caras con Causa to gain an additional stream of revenue and ultimately be able to provide more services to the community. Utilizing my business skills to engage in consulting meetings with our client has been rewarding thus far, and I am sure that this feeling will only increase once I am on-site and able to see for myself the impacts of the organization’s efforts on the local community of Cataño. To me, this program is not just about getting a change of scenery and having a fun spring break. I hope to gain personal, academic, and professional experiences that will have a long-term impact on my life.
Coming from the suburbs of Pittsburgh, where my exposure to diverse cultures has been somewhat limited, this trip symbolizes an opportunity to broaden my horizons, understand a different way of life, and connect with people whose experiences differ significantly from my own. The familiarity of my surroundings has offered comfort, but it has also sparked a curiosity to explore beyond the boundaries of my hometown. From the colorful streets of Old San Juan to the lush landscapes of El Yunque National Forest, I look forward to exploring the diverse beauty that Puerto Rico has to offer. Beyond the picturesque scenery, I am eager to connect with individuals and hear their life experiences, which I can compare against mine. One of my primary personal goals for this trip is to connect with people on a deep, human level. In meeting the locals, hearing their stories, and understanding the nuances of their daily lives, I hope to become a more culturally aware individual. Personally, I anticipate significant growth in my intercultural competence and adaptability. Engaging with Caras Con Causa and the local community will expose me to new perspectives and ways of working. I aim to enhance my communication and collaboration skills in a cross-cultural setting, preparing me for the globalized business environment I aspire to work in. As I prepare to embark on this journey, I carry with me not just academic and professional goals but a genuine eagerness to connect, learn, and contribute to a community that has graciously opened its doors to us.
From an academic perspective, the insights gained from working on the LabCom project in Cataño will contribute significantly to my overall undergraduate education and broaden my understanding of international business and community development. Additionally, the course materials about service-learning have given me a framework for building an ethical partnership with Caras con Causa and developing intercultural competence. With a major in finance major and minor in economics, my studies at Pitt have been centered around quantitative analysis and strategic decision-making. This background knowledge, along with my understanding of the socioeconomic factors influencing the community dynamics, will come into play when considering the sustainable management of resources. Our team will offer a benchmark pricing analysis that outlines the breakeven costs of running a study abroad program and offers some price suggestions. Moreover, my minor in Hispanic Language & Culture enhances my ability to communicate effectively within the local area. Recognizing the history of conquest and colonization in Puerto Rico is crucial to establishing meaningful connections there. This background knowledge will help me maintain respectful engagement and better appreciate the history and values of the people living there. I will be sure to keep my eye out for the two different flags in Puerto Rico, each one representing a different perspective on the island’s relationship with the United States and its quest for autonomy. I am interested to learn about individual perspectives on this issue and see how it influences my own opinion. Overall, this project will serve as a real-world application of my academic foundation, allowing me to utilize the skills I have developed to address the very nuanced challenges of community development in an international context.
I have also found our class discussions relating to these topics to be particularly interesting, as they have allowed me to gain a new perspective on the relationship we are building with this non-profit. I continue to remind myself that this course involves mutual engagement, and I must refrain from viewing it as an “us” and “them” situation. Through these readings and discussions, I have learned more about the collaborative nature of service-learning, the concept of reciprocity, and the importance of recognizing points of discomfort in the process. As I prepare to leave for this trip, I remind myself to approach the situation with respect, empathy, and open-mindedness…all of which are necessary for success in service-learning programs. The LabCom project in Cataño serves as a bridge between academia and real-world challenges. This journey is not just about grades or theoretical knowledge; it’s about applying what I’ve learned in a real situation to make a meaningful impact.
Professionally, I’m excited about the prospect of working with Caras Con Causa on a project that aligns with my career goals. This experience will not only enhance my resume but also provide me with practical skills in community and educational program development. I look forward to contributing to the organization’s mission and building connections that may be valuable in my future international business career. As someone with aspirations in consulting and a keen interest in international business, the LabCom project with Caras Con Causa is a valuable steppingstone towards realizing these ambitions. When I signed up for the program, I viewed it as a strategic investment in my professional growth that will provide practical skills directly relevant to my future career path. The international aspect of this project aligns seamlessly with my aspirations to work globally. Building connections with Caras Con Causa and contributing to their mission is not just a one-time project but an opportunity to cultivate relationships that may prove invaluable in my future international business endeavors, as I could see myself ending up in the non-profit sector. The ability to navigate diverse cultural contexts, understand community dynamics, and collaborate effectively in an international setting is a skill set that transcends the scope of this specific project. It’s not just about what I will gain from this project but how these learnings will become integral to the narrative I present in future job interviews, showcasing a well-rounded and globally minded professional ready to take on the challenges of the business world. As I prepare for this journey, I carry with me not only academic and personal goals but a clear vision of how this experience will shape my trajectory in the professional world.
Embarking on this global service-learning experience in Puerto Rico brings with it not only the excitement of cultural immersion but also the awareness of potential challenges. Conducting business in Puerto Rico may pose challenges related to the cultural norm of “mañana” or a more relaxed approach to time. This cultural aspect might affect the pace of our project and requires adaptability to different working styles. It’s essential to build relationships and understand the local context to navigate potential challenges effectively. While this cultural nuance contributes to the island’s charm, it will likely impact our daily itineraries and scheduled events. Recognizing that timelines may be perceived more flexibly is crucial to managing expectations and ensuring effective collaboration. Proactive communication about project timelines, expectations, and any adjustments that may be necessary due to cultural nuances will ensure that everyone is on the same page. More importantly, adaptability will be key in navigating our time on the island. An additional challenge we may encounter revolves around effectively navigating community expectations. Understanding and aligning with the needs and priorities of the local community is essential for sustainability of the project. Our initiatives should contribute positively to the community without imposing solutions that do not align with their long-term goals. Being attentive to local customs, communication styles, and decision-making processes will enhance the effectiveness of our solutions. Through genuine collaboration and an ongoing commitment to understanding and meeting the needs of the local community, our project can make a meaningful and lasting contribution to Puerto Rico.
As the departure date approaches, I am filled with so much excitement for the transformative experience waiting for me in Puerto Rico. This course symbolizes a convergence of personal, academic, and professional growth. The LabCom project in Cataño serves as a practical application of my academic foundation, providing insights into international business and community development. Professionally, it aligns with my career aspirations, offering a strategic investment in skills that transcend the scope of this project. Additionally, navigating cultural nuances and community expectations presents challenges that, with adaptability, become opportunities for meaningful collaboration and personal growth. In the next few days as I finish up midterm exams and get my suitcase packed, I feel assured that I am well-prepared for the experience that awaits me.
