Learning Lessons in London

Hi again! I can’t believe that we have already made it to the halfway point in the semester and London truly feels like a second home. I’ve quickly fallen into the pattern of keeping to the right side of the escalator and I even find myself peering to the right, instead of the left, to check for traffic when crossing the bustling streets. Since the last post, I’ve experienced the cultures of four new European countries and discovered many things about myself that I didn’t know before. The adjustment to life in London has not been exceedingly difficult; however, there have been a few challenges and bumps that I’ve had to overcome.

I was met with the realization, very early on in the program, that in order to truly experience the culture and lifestyle in London, you need to take not only a step but a leap out of your comfort zone. I initially found it difficult to leave the bubble of American life as you are constantly surrounded by other students from the US, but it has been very beneficial to strike up conversations with London natives and hear first hand experiences. You can easily dress like a Londoner, by throwing on a pea coat and sambas, or order fish and chips at the pub, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg. On the topic of food, I’ve had to adapt to the meal portions as well as the lower levels of customer service and attention that you receive when dining (and shopping) due to the difference in tipping culture. Also, the taste preferences in London differ slightly from American cuisine, but I can gladly support their love for mayo.

Additionally, one of the biggest adjustments I’ve had to make has been to the level of time management and organization needed to have a balanced life here in England. So far during my time here, I can’t recall a time when my carry-on has been fully unpacked, as I am traveling to new places most weekends with my friends. This is not something I would be able to say living in Pittsburgh, where I only leave the city for semester breaks. Therefore, being able to have designated time to complete work, attend my classes, immerse myself in London, and see the world, has been a challenge at times. With that being said, I think that is a bridge that is crossed with time and experience; so, now that I am comfortable with my course load and have a few trips under my belt, I hope for smooth sailing (or flying) the rest of the term.

I am immensely excited and optimistic about what the next couple months will bring, and I will update you all soon!

Cheers (and here are some pictures from a few places I’ve been to)!
