Growing in Florence

Studying abroad in Florence, Italy has been an amazing experience that has allowed me to develop numerous transferable or “soft” skills. Among these, adaptability stands out. Navigating a foreign country, with its unique culture, language, and customs, has required a high degree of adaptability. From understanding the local transportation systems to immersing myself in the Italian language, each day presents new challenges that require flexibility and quick thinking.

My communication skills have also seen significant development. Engaging with locals, fellow students, and program participants has provided many opportunities to improve both verbal and non-verbal communication. Whether it’s attempting to express myself through gestures or in the little Italian I have learned during my time studying, effective communication has become second nature.

Furthermore, I feel that I have gained independence throughout my time in Florence. Being away from the familiarities of home has required me to take ownership of my experiences, from managing finances to navigating the complexities of daily life and travel in a foreign country. This newfound independence has introduced confidence in my abilities to tackle challenges head-on and has created a sense of self-reliance.

In terms of technical or “hard” skills, I am not completing a formal internship during my time in Italy, but my academic course load has equipped me with valuable knowledge and skills. Courses in art history, Italian language, painting, and international finance have broadened my understanding of these subjects and provided me with tangible skills such as research, critical analysis, and cross-cultural competency.

Navigating cross-cultural situations has been both enlightening and challenging. Interacting with locals and CEA CAPA program participants from diverse backgrounds has expanded my worldview and fostered a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity.

These interactions have had a large impact on my identity, which has led me to question and reevaluate aspects of myself and culture that I may not have thought about before. Experiencing different cultural norms and perspectives has challenged me to consider different daily habits and ways of thinking, which has allowed me to have a better understanding of who I am and how I relate to the world around me.

In conclusion, studying abroad in Florence has been a transformative experience that has enriched me both personally and professionally. Through the development of transferable skills such as adaptability, communication, and independence, as well as gaining technical knowledge and cross-cultural competency, I have grown in ways that will undoubtedly shape my future endeavors.
