Throughout this global service learning experience, I have gained invaluable lessons that have reshaped my understanding of ethical partnership and collaboration. At the heart of these lessons is the importance of personal responsibility, respect, care, integrity, and collaboration in building meaningful relationships and achieving shared goals. Going into this I was solely just thinking about the service and the scope of work. However, as the project progressed and I engaged in in-class discussions and readings on ethical leadership and collaboration, my perspective changed. My thoughts have changed and success comes from an ethical partnership grounded in personal responsibility, respect, care, and the value for the well-being of all stakeholders. Also being able to learn about all of the wonderful things Caras con Causa is doing in Puerto Rico amazes me.

Comparing my current thoughts to my initial goals and expectations in the first two blog entries, I have come to realize that my in-country experience was not what I thought of at all. After coming back and reflecting on the week I thought it was such a good experience with the cultural immersion. While I initially focused on the aspects of the scope of work, I now noticed how similar the country and communities in Puerto Rico are to America. I thought it was a good mixture between exploring the touristy side of Puerto Rico while also experiencing the community of Puente Blanco. It was an experience that is something you have to experience yourself and hard to explain in words. 

Moreover, the in-class discussions and readings on ethical leadership and collaboration have reinforced the importance of integrity and collaboration in every aspect of our work. I have learned that ethical practice is not merely a checkbox to be checked off but rather a guiding principle that should inform every decision and action. Having a personal responsibility, respect, care, and integrity, we not only foster trust and mutual respect but also contribute to the well-being of all stakeholders involved in consulting. In essence, this whole experience has been an ever changing journey that has deepened my understanding of ethical partnership and collaboration. I will apply these lessons in all aspects of my personal and professional life, striving to build ethical partnerships grounded in personal responsibility, respect, care, integrity, and collaboration.

One transferable skill that I developed during this course is adaptability. Throughout the project, I encountered various challenges, unexpected changes, and evolving circumstances that required me to adapt quickly and effectively. Whether it was adjusting to new project requirements, accommodating Mariana’s changes in the itinerary, or navigating unforeseen obstacles, adaptability was essential in ensuring the success of our team and project outcomes.

This skill is crucial to my future professional life for numerous reasons. Adaptability is a valuable asset that enables professionals to thrive among uncertainty and ambiguity. By being adaptable, I can respond proactively to changing circumstances, embrace new opportunities, and pivot strategies as needed to achieve desired outcomes.

Secondly, adaptability fosters resilience and resourcefulness, qualities that are highly valued in the work environment. This ability to bounce back from adversity and persevere in the face of challenges is critical for achieving long-term success in any professional role. Moreover, adaptability enhances collaboration and teamwork by fostering a culture of flexibility, innovation, and continuous improvement. Adaptability is a fundamental skill that is always prevalent in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing professional environment. By embracing change, you can navigate challenges with confidence, thereby enhancing my future professional success and making a positive impact in the finance field. 

The significance of relationships in consulting work is the key to success. Our project with Pitt’s in-country client underscored the importance of nurturing strong, trusting relationships to navigate challenges and achieve shared goals. The strengths of Pitt’s existing relationship with the client facilitated open communication, streamlined processes, and fostered mutual understanding. 

In a professional interview, I would pitch the study abroad trip to Puerto Rico consulting project as a life changing experience that shows my ability to thrive in diverse and dynamic environments while making a meaningful impact. I would begin by providing an overview of the project, highlighting its objectives, scope, and the context in which it took place. I would emphasize the unique opportunity it provided to collaborate with a local organization, Caras con Causa, on addressing real-world challenges facing communities in Puerto Rico.

Next, I would delve into the key components of the project, including our consulting work with Caras con Causa, cultural immersion experiences, and community engagement initiatives. I would highlight how these aspects of the project enabled me to gain a deeper understanding of the social, economic, and environmental issues facing Puerto Rico, while also honing valuable skills such as cross-cultural communication, problem-solving, and adaptability.

I would then discuss my role and contributions to the project, creating a benchmark analysis and pricing strategy for Caras con Causa. I would provide specific examples of challenges I encountered and how I successfully navigated them, demonstrating my resilience, resourcefulness, and ability to think critically in complex situations. Finally, I would reflect on the impact of the project, both on the communities we served and on my own personal and professional development. Relationships play a pivotal role in conducting work of the nature experienced during our project with Caras con Causa in Puerto Rico. Pitt’s existing relationship with the in-country client served as both a strength and a vulnerability throughout the project. On one hand, the pre-existing dialogue and trust between Pitt and the client provided a solid foundation for collaboration. This facilitated open communication, streamlined processes, and fostered mutual understanding, thereby making it easier for project checkpoints and enhancing the quality of deliverables.

In conclusion, relationships are the backbone of successful project work, particularly in consulting and community engagement initiatives. While the strengths and vulnerabilities of pre-existing relationships can impact project dynamics, continued engagement, proactive communication, and a commitment to delivering value can help overcome challenges and foster mutually beneficial partnerships that endure beyond the project’s end result. For future groups working on this consulting project with Caras con Causa, there are three key pieces of advice that can greatly enhance their experience and impact. 

Firstly, make the most out of your time there and get to know the people you are doing service for. Building genuine connections with the local community members not only enriches your experience but also deepens your understanding of their needs, challenges, and aspirations. By actively listening to their stories, engaging in meaningful conversations, and immersing yourself in their culture, you can develop a deeper sense of empathy and compassion. Secondly, don’t be afraid to try new things and be open to any opportunities you get. Embrace the spirit of adventure and curiosity as you navigate unfamiliar interactions and engage in new experiences. Whether it’s trying new foods, participating in cultural activities, or exploring different ways of problem-solving, stepping outside your comfort zone fosters personal growth, creativity, and resilience. Each new experience presents an opportunity for learning, growth, and self-discovery. It’s good to approach them with an open mind and a willingness to embrace the unknown. I am so grateful for this experience, it was my first ever study abroad experience and it is something that I would have never gotten to experience with just in class learning. It opened my eyes to other cultures and interests I might have professionally and personally. This experience is one that I will never forget being a part of Pitt Business and something that has shaped me into the person I am today. I know I will always remember this trip and the impact I have made on such a wonderful organization Caras con Causa. It was definitely an experience I will cherish forever and have had the privilege of being a part of and will continue to grow from this amazing experience.
