Dear pre-departure Laura,
I’m glad you did it. Although this is easy to say in hindsight, the nerves, the planning, and the packing were all worth it. We are approaching our final weeks in the place you’ve grown so fond of and will be returning home with friends, knowledge, and memories (and lots of clothes) that you didn’t have before. When you get back to America remember to thank whoever told you to pack less because you’ll shop A LOT, and to make sure to explore London because time will fly (they were right).

You’ll miss your friends and family, undoubtedly, but will find comfort and excitement within the bonds you build and the people you meet on this new journey. You may not check off every box on your bucket list, but the experiences you gather will exceed your expectations and you can now say you’ve visited six more countries! Throughout your time abroad you’ve learned so much about yourself and the topics you hoped to delve into. You now know you love a Scouse accent and to mind the gap on the tube. Your courses have granted you a new perspective of different cultures, whether that be in the realm of art or marketing, and taught you that you can sit through three-hour classes! Also, although it may come as a surprise, presentations aren’t that bad, and solo excursions are actually quite freeing and fun!
Before beginning my trek across the pond, I was lucky enough to take with me advice from students who have been in this program previously. I was told things such as fly Ryanair and go to a football match. Though these tips do stand true, here are a few things I want you to know. First, get to know the people in your classes and living in your building. These friends will make your time abroad wonderful, and you’ll build relationships with people you never would have met without this amazing experience. Additionally, be prepared to still have a full course schedule and a workload to match, it won’t be a walk in the park, but the knowledge you will gain is worth it!

Your time in London will be one that you will cherish as you continue to grow and experience the world. It’s been a whirlwind of a time, but you’ll leave with a new sense of independence and love for what the vast world has to offer. Appreciate the time that you’ve been granted to live and thrive in the beautiful city of London and live life to the fullest!
I’ve loved being on this journey with you!
Yours truly,
You.
