Hi, my name is Dikchhya Kharel, and I’m a junior studying Computer Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering. In less than 72 hours, I’ll be getting on a plane to India for the Leadership in the Himalayas program. Crazy right!?
You see, I’ve always been someone who finds comfort in routine and familiarity. But lately, I’ve felt this itch to break free from my comfort zone and truly challenge myself. That’s why I’ve decided to embark on this incredible opportunity to study abroad in India. It’s not just about exploring a new culture or gaining academic insights; it’s about pushing my limits, discovering my own leadership potential, and seeing just how far I can go.
A little about me—I like traveling, learning about new cultures, and practicing karate in my spare time. Interestingly, I joined karate to get out of my comfort zone, and it has taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance, discipline, and self-confidence—qualities that I hope to further cultivate during my time in India.
Why Leadership in the Himalayas? I want to challenge myself to an extreme! The program is mostly outdoors and has a 10-day backpacking trek in the Himalayas. And I’m an indoorsy person who has never camped outside or slept in a tent before. To add to the thrill, this will be my first solo trip, without the safety net of my family by my side. So, you can imagine my anticipation as I prepare for India and the 10-day trek through the wilds of the Himalayas. This unique opportunity will not only immerse me in the breathtaking beauty of nature but also challenge me in ways I’ve never experienced before. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done in my life, and I can’t wait to see how it transforms me. I hope to learn more about my leadership capabilities, discover myself in a new way, and gain the confidence to tackle any challenge that comes my way. Plus, the fact that the program is in India adds an extra layer of excitement for me. India has always held a special place in my heart. Maybe it’s from all the Bollywood movies I’ve seen in my life, but I’ve always wanted to go there. And now, this is the perfect opportunity!
India here I come, but first, I’ve got a date with my suitcase! Time to start packing and praying I don’t forget my socks!
