Living & Commuting in London

After the past week and a half, I have been able to acclimate myself to my living situation. I’m currently living with four other girls from all different schools, and it has been a great environment to live in. We are located in Maida Vale near Little Venice. We have been doing a mix of eating out and cooking in our apartment, which has been a really good balance. There are a lot of differences I have noticed between my host institution and Pitt. At Pitt, I live in a two-bedroom apartment, so the dynamic between five girls is definitely different. My roommates and I have been exploring different pubs and restaurants in our neighborhood. We have been trying all different cuisines like Indian, Italian, Lebanese, and Thai. Regarding my internship, I will be traveling to Folkestone twice out of the six weeks and Susannah (my manager) will be coming to London once a week. The rest of my internship is entirely virtual. SomewhereNew is a group of people wanting to combine their passion for education with their love of travel, so education is always put first. The team is very personable and always puts customers first, creating a unique student experience. The woman I am working under is Susannah, where she first came to the UK to study at Oxford. Originally from California, she fell in love with traveling, and this made her passionate to help others fulfill their traveling dreams. The first week went pretty well. My main duties include helping Susannah with logistics. This includes processing online bookings and payments while also updating budgets to reconcile tour accounts. I’m also in charge of communicating with clients, suppliers (both existing and new) and participants in the tours. Coordinating arrangements for delivery of a well-organized tour including coaches, guides, accommodations, and meals is also a huge component. The main benefit of this experience includes understanding how much background work goes into a tour and the level of detail required to produce the end product. Also, gaining experience problem solving and dealing with processes that consider all eventualities. I hope to gain more soft skills like communication with other workers since I am used to interacting mostly with other students. I also want to understand more about the business processes in real time, not just learning about it in a classroom. I think my technical skills that I have learned in school will be helpful to apply in a working setting for the first time. Since I have yet to go in person to my internship, I am unsure of what it will be like. I will be going to Folkestone this week to meet Susannah in person for the first time, and I think that this will better connect us and further our communication. It will be exciting to travel somewhere different and I am excited for Susannah to come visit me in London once a week. I’ll be able to find some cool spots around where I’ll be meeting Susannah in London, as well as when I go to Folkestone a few times during my time here. During this first week, I’ve filled out a lot of different spreadsheets. Some have been accounting invoices and others have been regarding customer information. A lot of the customers Susannah has are repeating since they will have certain schools of groups come back to take different groups or years of students. This has been interesting because I am seeing real customers processing payments and how these groups form.
