Another week in Dublin has gone by, and this trip is already going by in a blur. This week was a mixed bag for me as while I still found ways to hang out with my friends and go out and explore the city of Dublin, I discovered that I would be going to a different placement for the rest of my internship here. This situation was very stressful and upsetting for me as I was enjoying my time working at my previous internship and did not know if I had done anything wrong. Luckily, I was able to get a new placement and after starting my first day there today, I am hopeful and optimistic that this placement will be beneficial for helping me learn and grow as a worker and as a person. I was also able to take my mind off this high-stress situation by going out with my friends on Friday night and exploring more of the city during the weekend. Like I have done during most of my nights out here in Dublin, my friends and I continued to experience more of Dublin’s live music scene. Dublin has a great live music scene, and my nights out here are providing me with unforgettable experiences. I also continued to experience more of the city as on Sunday, I explored the more suburban and less crowded parts of the city. Dublin is a big city, and it was really cool to see and experience the more authentic and less touristy parts of the city.
Uncertainty exists in every workplace, and I have experienced plenty of uncertainty during my short time here in Dublin, much of it happening during this past week. Finding out that I was going to a new placement created lots of uncertainty and strain in my time here as I did not know what kind of new placement I was going to get or why I had to even switch places from my previous placement in the first place. Luckily for me, my placement worked hard to get me a new placement before the end of the week and clarified the reasons why I was transferring to a new placement, none of which were my fault. Still, there was a lot of uncertainty involved with my new placement as I would essentially be starting over again, meeting new coworkers, and having new tasks once again. However, after my first day at my new placement at the Mercantile Entertainment Group, a lot of the uncertainty that I had about my first day had disappeared. Both my supervisor and my coworkers were super supportive and nice, and there were a lot of perks that my other placement did not have, like free lunch and coffee, my own computer, and so much more. I also found that the tasks at my new placement were more engaging and had more to do with finance than my work at my old internship, which was a wide variety of tasks with only a few of them focusing on finance. It is also really nice to work with a team, rather than having to figure out multiple tasks by myself. Still, uncertainty will always be a part of my placement, as I do not exactly know what my future tasks will be or how the rest of my time here in Dublin will go. Managing ways to reduce and overcome this uncertainty in both the workplace and in life is necessary and crucial in order to both progress and maintain stability in your career and in your life as well. One of the best ways that I found to get rid of some of this uncertainty in the workplace has been to talk to and know my coworkers and my supervisors, as these relationships not only make the workplace feel more welcoming and supportive but can also help build your career as you progress higher in your respective field. This is a thing that I plan to do at my new placement and has me looking forward to the types of relationships that I can build in the workplace this summer. Another way that I plan to alleviate the uncertainty that I have is to complete the tasks given to me efficiently, while also asking my coworkers and supervisor for help whenever I need help with a certain project or task. All in all, uncertainty is something that I have unfortunately experienced a lot during my short time here in Dublin, however, I have ways to overcome these feelings and remain hopeful for the rest of my time here.
