It has been a few weeks since the program ended, and I now have some time to reflect on the incredible experiences and growth I have undergone during my time in India. This adventure has been transformative on personal, academic, and professional levels, leaving me with a wealth of skills and knowledge to carry into my future.
Personal Growth:
The 10-day trek stands out as one of the highlights of my life. It tested my mental and physical endurance in ways I had never experienced before. The realization that I am stronger and more capable than I ever imagined has been a profound revelation. I learned to adapt to high altitudes and carry a 50+ lb backpack, which has significantly boosted my confidence in my physical and mental resilience. This trek taught me the importance of self-leadership, perseverance, and the power of pushing beyond perceived limits.
Culturally, living in India exposed me to diverse traditions, cuisines, and ways of life that were both enlightening and enriching. The farewell dinner at the Hanifl Centre and the explorations of local markets and restaurants were not just enjoyable, but also deeply immersive experiences that broadened my cultural understanding and appreciation.
Academic Growth:
Academically, the program provided me with valuable insights and practical knowledge that I can integrate into my studies. The leadership lessons learned during the trek were particularly impactful. Seeing the theories of self-leadership and team dynamics play out in real-world scenarios was eye-opening. The feedback sessions during the trek highlighted the importance of one-on-one interactions for personal development. This approach has inspired me to seek more personalized feedback in my academic life to better understand my strengths and areas for improvement.
Visiting historical landmarks like the Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal provided a tangible connection to the rich history and architectural marvels of India. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for history and culture, which I plan to incorporate into my academic projects and research.
Professional Growth:
Professionally, the program has equipped me with critical leadership skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure. The airport incident highlighted the practical application of leadership principles in stressful situations. Despite the challenges, I remained composed and demonstrated care for my teammates, reflecting the principles of effective leadership. This experience reinforced the importance of adaptability, problem-solving, and team cohesion, skills that are essential in any professional setting.
I also learned the value of helping others become leaders. By assisting and observing others in leadership roles, I gained new perspectives and insights that will be invaluable in my career. Encouraging and mentoring others is now a key component of my leadership philosophy, which I plan to apply in future internships and professional roles.
Expectations vs. Reality:
Prior to the trip, I had certain cultural and personal expectations about India. I anticipated a vibrant and diverse cultural experience, and this expectation was more than met. The warmth and hospitality of the people, the rich history, and the delicious cuisine exceeded my expectations. However, I also expected the transition to be smoother. The high altitudes during the trek and the chaotic situation at the airport were challenges I had not fully anticipated. These experiences, though, were valuable lessons in adaptability and resilience.
Integration of Skills and Knowledge:
The skills and knowledge gained during this program will be integrated into my academic and professional endeavors in several ways:
1. Self-Leadership: I will continue to develop self-leadership by setting personal goals and seeking constructive feedback.
2. Cultural Awareness: The cultural insights gained will inform my interactions and collaborations in diverse environments.
3. Problem-Solving: The problem-solving skills honed during the trek and airport incident will be applied to academic projects and professional challenges.
4. Team Dynamics: Understanding team dynamics and the importance of supporting and mentoring others will shape my approach to group work and leadership roles.
Final Thoughts:
This journey in India has been a transformative experience that has shaped me in numerous ways. I am returning with a deeper understanding of myself, enriched by cultural immersion and equipped with practical skills that will benefit me academically and professionally. I am grateful for this opportunity and excited to apply these lessons to future endeavors. I also thank Vipul, and Gaurav for following along on this incredible journey. I also want to thank all the Hanifl Centre employees for making it such a good experience.
Until next time,
Nischal Kharel
