The Last Hurrah: Lessons Learned in London

It’s hard to believe my study abroad experience is coming to a close. This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Pitt GBI program, which allowed me to study and intern in London for six weeks. Reflecting on my time abroad, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences and growth I encountered, and I am excited to share this journey with you.

From the moment I arrived in London, I felt a sense of adventure and eagerness to embrace everything this multicultural city had to offer. Living in a homestay in Kensal, I was immersed in the authentic London lifestyle, far removed from the typical tourist experience. This setup pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to connect deeply with local culture and customs.

One of the most significant personal challenges was adapting to the indirect communication style of the English. Initially, this was perplexing, but it ultimately taught me patience and the importance of careful observation. I learned to pick up on subtle social cues and to appreciate the value of understated interactions. This cultural sensitivity is something I will carry forward in all my future endeavors and international trips.

The international marketing course I took alongside my internship provided a greater understanding of global marketing strategies and practices. Learning from an international professor and engaging with peers from diverse backgrounds enriched my academic experience. The course content bridged theoretical knowledge with practical application, making the lessons relevant and immediately useful to my internship.

Visiting historical sites like the Tower of London also deepened my appreciation for the rich history and traditions that influence British business practices. Understanding the cultural context in which businesses operate is crucial, and this course emphasized the importance of cultural intelligence in global marketing.

My internship at Better Design Digital/Anythink was a pivotal part of my experience. As a marketing intern, I was entrusted with significant responsibilities, including representing the company at tech events and crafting marketing strategies. This role not only enhanced my technical skills in SEO, social media strategy, and design but also honed my communication and teamwork abilities.

One of the standout experiences was pitching our product features at London Tech Week and ReSet Connect. This required a blend of precise communication and compelling storytelling, ensuring that our message resonated with potential clients. The confidence I gained from these presentations and the creative problem-solving involved in our projects are invaluable assets for my future career.

Working in a startup environment where I had the freedom to lead marketing initiatives was both challenging and rewarding. The experience taught me the importance of adaptability, creativity, and resilience. Collaborating closely with my supervisor, Chris, and a team of interns, I learned the significance of collaboration and open-mindedness in professional settings.

The skills and insights I gained in London have already started shaping my approach to my studies and future career. I have developed my cultural sensitivity– the ability to understand and adapt to different cultural contexts– which will be crucial as I engage with diverse teams and clients in my future career. Another key takeaway I gained from this program is my stronger communication skills. The experience of pitching and presenting in a professional setting has boosted my confidence and effectiveness in communication, which will be beneficial in both academic presentations and professional interactions in future. I have also gained lots of practical marketing skills that I can continue to implement in the rest of my career. The hands-on experience with SEO, social media strategy, and design has provided a solid foundation that I will build upon in my coursework and future internships or jobs. Professionally, I feel better equipped to tackle the challenges of the marketing world and to leverage my international experience in future roles.

My study abroad experience in London was transformative, both personally and professionally. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity. The growth I experienced during these six weeks will undoubtedly shape my future endeavors and contribute to my success in the business world. Thank you for following along!

Cheers!
