The Railways of London

Interning with Platform Creative while studying abroad in London has been an exciting and life-changing experience. However, there have been challenges with adjusting to a new culture on both a personal and professional level. I’ve had to pick up new skills and adapt to the demands of working in London.

Understanding communication styles and professional etiquette in a different country has been one of the most difficult changes I’ve had to make during my internship. Workplaces in the United States frequently promote open communication and quick decisions. However, I’ve observed a more reserved and indirect manner in London, particularly in work-related situations. Feedback is typically broader, and emails and discussions are frequently full of respectful formalities. I found it difficult to understand requirements and determine whether my work was up to par. To deal with this, I’ve improved my awareness of my coworkers’ communication styles and modified my strategy accordingly. I try to mimic my coworkers’ professionalism and tone by seeking clarification when necessary. I’ve become improved at handling interactions at work over time.

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced at Platform Creative is the ambiguity that sometimes comes with tasks. Unlike structured classroom assignments, PR work requires more adaptability. My projects shift, clients evolve, and expectations aren’t always explicitly stated. This uncertainty initially left me feeling unsure about my contributions. I’ve started getting more input and asking more questions to get through this. I take the initiative to offer suggestions or define goals early on rather than waiting for detailed directions. This has improved the effectiveness of my work and given me an increased feeling of control.

Living in London outside of my internship has also been a challenge. Simple things like grocery shopping and using public transportation first felt intimidating because this is the first time. It took some getting accustomed to because of the city’s fast pace. What has been successful? allowing myself the freedom to explore. I’ve gradually gained confidence in my ability to get around the city and have come to terms with getting lost. London’s wide range of possibilities and amazing variety have made each challenge enjoyable. I have been forced to step outside of my comfort zone so far, but each challenge has been a chance for me to develop. I’m excited to keep learning, both professionally and personally, in the months ahead.
