This program in Florence has taught me a lot about myself and the world around me. It is such a rewarding experience to fully live in another country and find elements of home in a new place. As the second half of this program continues, it is important to pause and reflect on the skills I have gained thus far. This program excels in developing and obtaining transferable soft skills like confidence, collaboration, and adaptability. I have gained confidence in myself since I now know that I am capable of making a large change in my life and am able to find routine and happiness anywhere. I have also become more confident walking around a city that I don’t know very well and getting to know it over time. Living with 7 roommates and traveling as a group has strengthened my ability to collaborate and organize ideas. Collaboration is so important when traveling so that everyone’s ideas and feelings are heard. Adaptability is a soft skill that is crucial when experiencing any kind of change. Adapting to new eating patterns, sleeping arrangements, weather, and overall culture has allowed me to grow outside of my comfort zone.
Some technical hard skills that I have gained in this program are some foreign languages and budgeting. Communicating in class and around Florence in Italian has been both challenging and rewarding. I feel so grateful to learn Italian while I am here and have the opportunity to use the phrases in day to day life. Budgeting for living and travel expenses has been essential to getting the most out of being abroad. Being smart about when I spend money while still allowing myself to have one in a lifetime experience is something that I will carry with me throughout the rest of my life.
Interacting with locals and other program participants has shown me that while people are unique in their own ways, we are also similar in fundamental areas. Watching the locals here enjoy the little things in life and people in this program appreciating some of the most beautiful places in the world is such a wonderful thing to experience. It’s taught me that I love both the small and larger moments to appreciate the life, culture, and history around us. Florence is starting to feel like home now more than ever and I am enjoying getting to know the streets and businesses around me. I’m looking forward to continuing learning and growing during the final weeks ahead in this beautiful city!
