Lessons from My Internship

Throughout my internship experience, I have developed both soft and hard skills that will undoubtedly be useful in my future career. One of the most useful skills I have strengthened is my ability to work effectively in a team setting. My internship requires me to communicate with my supervisor and coworkers every day, and the majority of my work is done alongside my fellow interns. I have learned that I must be confident in voicing my opinions while also being open to compromise to find the best solution.

My time management skills have also improved greatly during my time in London, since I am much busier here than I typically am at Pitt. While abroad, I have to balance three classes and a part-time internship, all while making time to explore London. My busy schedule has been an adjustment because I have needed to learn how to structure my days in the most productive way possible.

In terms of technical skills I have gained, I have been working on email marketing by creating campaigns in Klaviyo, and tracking performance based on data. I have also been using A/B testing to make sure all emails are as effective as possible. Much of my internship involves social media marketing, and so far I have learned a lot about how to create content that will interest a broad audience.

An interesting part of my experience abroad has been navigating cross-cultural situations when working alongside people from different backgrounds. Communication styles especially have been difficult to adjust to, since sometimes it is difficult to understand exactly what people are saying when they use terms that I am unfamiliar with. However, learning how to work alongside people who are from different cultural backgrounds has made me more aware of my perspective and how I can grow by embracing these differences and educating myself.
