Dear Past Me,
Looking back at where I was before moving to London for four months to study abroad, it’s hard to believe just how much I have grown—personally and professionally. This experience has been everything I could have hoped for and more.
To start, I have gained a deeper sense of independence. Being in a new city, in a new country, has pushed me out of my comfort zone. Whether navigating the Tube or starting my internship in a different cultural setting, I have learned how to adapt and thrive in unfamiliar environments.
I also feel that I have broadened my global perspective. London is a huge city filled with millions of people, and living here has shown me a new appreciation and view of life. Though I have learned a lot academically, I have also gained long-lasting relationships. I could not have been luckier to be roomed with five random girls I can now call my best friends. Additionally, having a fun and healthy work environment has also shown me new friendships. Coming into this program was terrifying at first, worrying about who I was going to meet and how I was going to adapt, however, I have realized that being open to new cultures and ideas is key to growing personally and professionally.
One thing I wish I had known before coming here is how important it is to embrace change. While I was excited to come to London, it was also crucial to know that it is okay to not have a stable routine right away. Things take time, especially when you are in a new country. Being patient to change and allowing myself to fully immerse myself in the experience was the most important.
On the other hand, what surprised me the most was how quickly I adapted to life in such a fast-paced city. I was overwhelmed at first, however, this is now going to be a memory I will never forget. Learning how to adapt to a new life while also balancing my internship and school was not an easy journey, but it turned out to be one of the best.
This experience has shaped me in ways I did not even expect, and it has made me confident that I want to pursue a career where I can continue exploring new cultures.
As I take in my last month in London, I’ll be sure to cherish the memories and the incredible learning opportunities. London has truly been a second home, and I will always be grateful for this experience.
With love,
Grace
