This week was really fun. On Monday I took the time t o sleep in a clean my room so I could start the week with a fresh and clean mind. Then, me and my friend went to St. Stephen’s Green park to go for a walk and read. It was super windy so we could only stay for a little bit before the wind was ending us home. There were branches and leaves blowing into my eyes and the wind made that temperature drop a lot. I’ve noticed that the weather fluctuates a lot in Ireland and its taking a bit to get used to.
My boss did not want to start till Wednesday so on Tuesday I went into the City Centre to get a couple more things. I had to pick up some work clothes and needed to get a coffee machine so I would stop buying coffee.
On Wednesday I had the opportunity to start my new job. Because the position is not typically in office, I had to meet them at a hotel. I was nervous because I did not know exactly what I would be doing on a day-to-day basis. I met them at The Alex Hotel and it was honestly so nice. They set me up with the work login and got me set up on all the websites. My bosses and supervisors were incredibly nice and helpful. They walked me through what I would be doing in my position and I am looking forward to what I will be working on.
On Thursday I started my first official day of work and I took the time to familiarize myself with the databases and then wrote out a plan for the projects I would bee accomplishing. The job is not as structured and clear cut as I was expecting but that is okay. Instead there are more long projects that take more time and far out deadlines because they are not something I can accomplish in a day.
On Friday I worked more and started to follow through with the steps on my plan. I had to compile a long list of potential connections for my boss. This involved using excel and creating a spreadsheet which I have worked with before.
On Saturday me and my friends went to City Centre and I went for a walk around St. Stephens Green before they met me there. It started down pouring so I had to wait under an overhang before I met my friends for some shopping. It was very fun and the day ended up clearing up. We got dinner at a really good Italian place that had good food for affordable prices.
Sunday was big a day as we had to meet at city centre at 6:00 am for a full day of tours. We started the day at the Cliffs of Mohr which was absolutely breathtaking. Then we went to the Burren which was my favorite part of the day because I did not know we were going. It looked like another planet and it was a great picture spot. Then we went to lunch and got ciders, and my friends split fish and chips. Finally, we finished the day in Galway with some shopping and walking around. Galway was truly beautiful and I wish I had more time there. The day trip was very fast paced which made some parts hard to enjoy but it was the best affordable way to see great parts of Ireland.
Time management is a big part of navigating a new job in a new country. I think for me a big part of time management is setting up a plan. Because I have more freedom with my job and more long-term projects, the effects of good planning are my responsibility. I follow the plan I wrote for myself to make sure that I am keeping up with the necessary tasks to complete my work. I think that time management and getting your jobs done is something everyone does differently, and no exact approach is the right way. It is important to do what works best for you and your job and to make sure you are complying with your what your supervisors want.
So far, I am enjoying my time at my new job and in this city. It feels like the next couple weeks are gonna fly by and I look forward to becoming more comfortable in my position. I hope I also learn more about time management in my new position to improve my skills.
