A Day of Learning

Today was an exceptionally engaging day, marked by a highly beneficial lunch experience with Tierra Thorne, a distinguished Pitt Business Executive-in-Residence (EIR), an accomplished social worker, and the innovative CEO of Blanket & Boards. This interaction proved to be both enjoyable and thought-provoking for our entire group, offering a blend of practical business insights and inspiration.

Ms. Thorne shared her profound expertise, delving into the intricacies of strategically marketing her business in today’s competitive landscape. She explained not just the ‘what,’ but the ‘how’ behind her successful campaigns, touching on everything from digital engagement and brand storytelling to identifying niche markets and understanding customer psychology. Beyond marketing, she illuminated the art of forging strong, meaningful connections within the industry, emphasizing the importance of networking, relationship-building, and leveraging community ties, which are all vital skills for any aspiring professional.

A particularly insightful part of our discussion revolved around her experiences with past interns. Ms. Thorne highlighted the truly symbiotic relationship she cultivates: detailing how their contributions provided concrete, tangible assistance to her business, through ways such as social media management, market research, or operational support. Simultaneously, she explained the immense value these roles offered to the students themselves, providing them with invaluable real-world experience, practical skill development, and a direct glimpse into the challenges and triumphs of entrepreneurship. This comprehensive perspective showed the Haller team the mutual benefits derived from well-structured internship programs.  Applying for an internship while attending the University of Pittsburgh is absolutely something I aspire to do, so I found her insights into internships particularly meaningful to me.

The conversation left a lasting impression, demonstrating the power of mentorship and the practical application of business principles.
