The Blanket and Board Picinic

We had an amazing picnic with Tierra Thorne, but it did not start out amazing. We were going to Schenley Park at first, but of course, Pittsburgh has to rain all the time. It’s not all bad news; it got moved to Highland Park under shade. When we began the picnic, we told her all about our Carrigart project and what the different groups are doing for their topic. She seemed genuinely interested in what we had to say about each of our topics and gave us feedback, which is helpful to get feedback from someone other than our teachers. When people give you good advice about what you are doing, it makes it even more meaningful. She also told us about her journey of how she started Blanket and Board as a passion project during COVID-19; she wanted people to be able to connect without having to be in a closed place or outside. Then she said her business got popular with a $10 ad on Facebook because during COVID-19, people wanted to have a meal with their friends and family when they could not do it. While being an entrepreneur, she is a social worker. She shared how she works to support kids who are living on their own and going through tough times. Talking with Tierra was inspiring because it showed us that you can follow your passions, build something unique, and still give back to your community. Talking to Tierra was a powerful lesson in what is possible. Her journey showed us that you don’t have to choose between following your passion and giving back, as it can make your life have more meaning.  Her story made me think about how I want to shape my future in a way that makes the world a better place.
