Community First: The Hills District Story

The Haller team had the privilege of touring the Hills District today, guided by Terri Baltimore. She provided an in-depth look at the neighborhood’s rich history, highlighting historic buildings, key institutions, and the landmarks that have shaped the community’s identity. Every structure and site seemed to hold a story, adding to the unique character and beauty of the Hills District.

What truly distinguishes thriving communities from struggling ones, however, are the people who live there and their commitment to their neighborhood. The Hills District is a testament to this, with many assets and institutions that have helped it flourish. One cornerstone is the Hill District Federal Credit Union, which manages over $16 million in assets and provides residents with financial security and trust. Community gathering places, such as local barber shops, also play an essential role in fostering connection and belonging. Another community gathering place is the YMCA, which offers amenities like a swimming pool, gym, and sports facilities for neighborhood residents. We also learned about the historic Freedom House, the nation’s first modern EMS service, which began right here in the Hills District.

For business leaders, supporting the communities where they operate requires more than financial investment.  It demands genuine engagement and a long-term commitment to shared growth. This can take many forms: investing in local initiatives, creating jobs, and empowering small businesses. When businesses weave community support into their core values and daily operations, they not only uplift their neighbors but also strengthen their own brands, earning respect and loyalty in return. nMost importantly, effective business leadership begins with understanding and honoring local history. By respecting a community’s past, leaders can build deeper connections and create sustainable businesses that truly thrive.
