I recently enjoyed a fascinating afternoon in Pittsburgh, beginning with a lunch alongside Brian Shultz. He is the primary individual responsible for Global Experiences at Pitt, which entails facilitating remarkable international opportunities for students. During our lunch, Brian conveyed some truly intriguing insights regarding the university’s Plus3 program in Vietnam. He clarified that it is a distinctive, short-term journey aimed at providing students with a glimpse into the experience of working and living in a different region of the world. It is not merely a vacation; it focuses on acquiring genuine, practical skills and understanding the dynamics of a rapidly developing country like Vietnam. Brian elaborated on how the program is structured to offer students a profound comprehension of Vietnam, encompassing its rich history, the current operations of businesses there, and the emphasis on growth that benefits both the populace and the environment. It appeared to be an extraordinary opportunity for students to genuinely expand their perspectives. Following our lunch, my group visited the Irish Design Centre. This venue was overflowing with exquisite, handcrafted products that vividly showcased Ireland’s remarkable artistic heritage. It was truly inspiring to learn about their strategies for enhancing sales. During their slower seasons, the Irish Design Centre invites musicians to perform in front of the store. They also engage students from local universities to participate in knitting with wool sourced directly from Ireland. This initiative fosters a genuine sense of community and enables visitors to appreciate the dedication and skill involved in Irish craftsmanship. It represents a clever business strategy as it not only encourages purchases but also instills a sense of belonging, thereby cultivating a loyal customer base. It serves as an exemplary illustration of how a retail environment can evolve into a lively cultural center, attracting individuals and encouraging them to return for more.
