We started our day visiting the Oaklander Hotel which is right across from Soldiers & Sailors, so we were able to walk over and hear about the hotel and hotel management. We talked to Theresa Murdoch about her role in Human Resources at the Oaklander, and we heard about the behind the scenes of the hotel. There is a seasonality aspect to the hotel, like many of the other places we visited, but I found it very interesting how vital the hotel is to the area- specifically revolving around Pitt and CMU, as most of their busy times are during move-in and parents weekends. The location of the hotel is also key to their operations, the proximity to college campuses, and also the city of Pittsburgh makes it a top choice stop for businesspeople and others visiting the area. We will hopefully be able to take some of the best practices from the hotel to apply them to the hotel in Carrigart.
Today we had an amazing opportunity to visit Field Day which is a co-working space in Lawrenceville! We got to look at their space and learned about their operations. I found it very interesting that they have a very large space and often rent out areas to small businesses, artists, travelers, and anyone who might need to utilize it. The co-working space does not limit itself to the work aspect but is also a place that is used to bring the community closer together. There are events like rehearsal dinners, baby showers, cocktail hours, and many other company events that are held at the space. I believe that if we take some small things from the co-working spaces here, like Field Day, we will be able to make an impact on Gteic, and one that will help the community as well.
